My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 star Nia Vardalos offers a major filming update. Penned by Vardalos in her screenplay debut, the first installment in the rom-com franchise was released in 2002 and became a runaway success. Nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay, My Big Fat Greek Wedding propelled Vardalos’ comedy career to new heights and became one of the highest-grossing romantic comedies of all time.

Directed by Joel Zwick, My Big Fat Greek Wedding follows Fotoula “Toula” Portokalos (Vardalos), a young Greek-American woman who falls in love with the definitely not Greek Ian Miller (John Corbett). Featuring a stellar supporting cast that includes the late Michael Constantine as Toula’s Windex bottle-toting father Gus and Lainie Kazan as Toula’s mother Maria, the charming film spawned a short-lived TV sequel series and a 2016 sequel film, My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2. Last year, Vardalos revealed more Portokalos family antics were on the horizon with the announcement of My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3. Vardalos had penned the script and was looking for financing throughout 2021; now it looks like the movie has moved forward considerably.

In her latest update on the third installment, Vardalos recently took to social media to announce that My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 has begun filming in Athens, Greece. In the video, Vardalos reveals she is the director of the film and offers a quick look at the set from the window of her hotel room. Of course, My Big Fat Greek Wedding fans can expect the entire supporting cast to return for the next installment. Sadly, Constantine passed away last year and was unable to begin filming My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3. However, Vardalos previously revealed that the beloved actor gave the third film his blessing, and the project will pay tribute to Constantine as Gus Portokalos.
