What Happens To Obi-Wan After Kenobi (Before A New Hope)

Obi-Wan Kenobi is set in between Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith and the original Star Wars, but what happens to Obi-Wan between the events of the series and A New Hope? The show takes place 10 years after Revenge of the Sith and focuses on Obi-Wan coming out of hiding to rescue the kidnapped Leia Organa. But what is known about Obi-Wan Kenobi after the series, before he decides to help Luke fight against the Empire?

Obi-Wan’s life is one of the more engaging in all of Star Wars, with the character being one of the main focuses of both the prequel and the original eras. Chronologically, Obi-Wan Kenobi first appears in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace alongside Qui-Gon Jinn as the latter’s padawan. He then goes on to train Anakin in Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones before becoming a general in the Clone Wars.

Obi-Wan’s journey then takes him to the events of Revenge of the Sith and the end of the Clone Wars, after which he goes into hiding because of the Jedi purge of Order 66. Ten years after this is when Obi-Wan Kenobi takes place. The Jedi’s life after this is somewhat a mystery, up until his agreement with Luke to rescue Leia from the Death Star in A New Hope.

Obi-Wan’s First Meeting With Luke After The Kenobi Series

While not a lot is known about Obi-Wan’s life between Obi-Wan Kenobi and A New Hope, there is a comic published by LINE Webtoon in which Obi-Wan meets Luke Skywalker officially. This webcomic’s canonicity was in doubt for a while, until Lucasfilm confirmed their collaboration with the publisher, admitting the story is legitimately part of the franchise. The comic features a 12-year-old Luke, meaning it takes place around two years after the events of Obi-Wan Kenobi.

In the story, Luke is out in the desert with his friend Windy before the duo becomes caught up in a sandstorm. Once the storm dies down, Luke notices a Krayt dragon stalking him and Windy. Just before the creature attacks, Obi-Wan comes out of nowhere and beheads the beast, saving Luke and Windy. Luke asks the stranger who he is, and Obi-Wan replies that he is Ben Kenobi, an old friend of the Skywalker family. Obi-Wan then takes Luke and Windy back home safely.

Luke’s uncle, Owen Lars, thanks Obi-Wan for saving the boy’s life and returning him safely, yet he also warns him to stay away from his homestead in order to save Luke from further danger. Obi-Wan states that the Force is strong with Luke and that one day, the boy will have to leave the farm, to which Owen responds that the Jedi and the Republic are done, and Obi-Wan should stay away. This lines up with Owen’s attitude towards Obi-Wan expressed in Obi-Wan Kenobi episode 1.

Living In Exile And Becoming “The Oil-Bringer”

A short story collection entitled Star Wars: Life Day Treasury gives more insight into Obi-Wan Kenobi’s exploits after his first official meeting with Luke Skywalker. One of the short stories is titled “An Old Hope” and centers around an older Obi-Wan’s relationship with droids. The story centers on the astromech droid LA-R1, which is kidnapped by the hooded, scavenging Jawas, and an elderly man confirmed to be Obi-Wan witnesses the abduction. The Jawas’ Sandcrawler eventually gets wrecked, and the droid is left alone in the ruins. Obi-Wan cuts the droid out of the Sandcrawler, saving it from being stranded. LA-R1 then mistakes the elderly Obi-Wan for a Santa Claus-like figure and dubs him “The Oil-Bringer.”

While “An Old Hope” isn’t vital to Star Wars canon in any way, it is a fun side story that fills in some of Obi-Wan’s time before A New Hope. It also changes the way he sees droids. In the prequel trilogy, he is fairly dismissive of droids and sees them as replaceable. However, living in exile seems to have caused Obi-Wan to see droids in a different way, as evident by his treatment of LA-R1.

Confrontation With Maul In Star Wars: Rebels

Arguably the biggest, most consequential moment of Obi-Wan’s life between Obi-Wan Kenobi and A New Hope is shown within the animated series Star Wars Rebels. The second season of the show reintroduces Maul to the universe after last being seen chronologically in Solo: A Star Wars Story. One thing that Rebels established with Maul is the grudge he still held against Obi-Wan for cutting him in half in The Phantom Menace. This led Maul to search out a Sith Holocron that allowed him to find out that Obi-Wan is still alive and where he is hiding.

Star Wars Rebels shows Maul finding an elderly Obi-Wan. After a brief conversation, Maul uncovers the truth of Obi-Wan’s exile and realizes that he is protecting someone: Luke. Now knowing that Maul has to be stopped, due to his intense protection of Luke, Obi-Wan ignites his lightsaber and the two engage in a brief stand-off. Eventually, Maul rushes Obi-Wan and attempts to use the same sequence of moves he used over 20 years earlier to kill Qui-Gon Jinn. However, Obi-Wan foresees this and swiftly cuts him down. As Maul dies, Obi-Wan reveals that Luke is the Chosen One to destroy the Sith, something both Obi-Wan and Maul wish for. Maul states how Luke Skywalker will avenge the duo before dying in the arms of his old rival.

This duel takes place around two years before A New Hope, meaning it is the last chronological appearance of Obi-Wan before the events of the first movie. Again, this is arguably the most consequential moment of Obi-Wan’s exile post-Obi-Wan Kenobi given the payoff of a rivalry that began in The Phantom Menace. Not only did the two face each other in that movie, but the rivals came into contact many times throughout Star Wars: The Clone Wars, meaning Rebels satisfyingly paid off a very long arc for the two characters.

While there is certainly room in between Obi-Wan Kenobi and A New Hope for Lucasfilm to tell more stories, these are the major points in current canon between the two projects in which Obi-Wan features. Although, given the hints from both Lucasfilm and Ewan McGregor about there being more stories to tell with Obi-Wan, it isn’t hard to imagine more stories in between these points being told. With the Obi-Wan Kenobi season finale coming up, audiences will have to see whether Lucasfilm chose to leave the story open for more adventures with the former Jedi in exile.
