Firefly Star Nathan Fillion On If He'd Still Work With Joss Whedon

Firefly lead Nathan Fillion opens up about his experience with Joss Whedon on set and whether or not he would work with the director again. The sci-fi adventure series came out in 2002 and ran for just one season before meeting an untimely cancellation. However, it quickly became a cult sensation. Creator Whedon followed it up with the 2005 film Serenity, which was the last time the world saw Mal (Fillion) and his crew. While it may be too late for a Firefly revival, fans have been clamoring for new content for years.

The idea of a reboot or sequel seemed even less likely after a series of accusations against Whedon emerged, beginning in 2020. Justice League star Ray Fisher alleged that Whedon displayed abusive and racist behavior during the film’s extensive reshoots after the director took over the project after Zack Snyder left for personal issues. A bevy of actors and crew members defended Fisher, with him later being backed up with further allegations by costar Gal Gadot and Buffy the Vampire Slayer regular Charisma Carpenter. The actresses recounted their accounts of abusive and misogynistic experiences at the filmmaker’s hands, for which Whedon ultimately made excuses.

Fillion recently sat down with Inside of You host and former Smallville star Michael Rosenbaum to discuss his career when the topic of a Firefly reboot came up. The actor emphatically states that he would take the job, but then Rosenbaum throws the wrench of Whedon’s controversies into the mix, asking if Fillion would work with the director again. He clarifies that he did not have a negative experience with Whedon, who he calls, “funny, self-deprecating, incredibly talented… maybe a little haunted,” and would work with him in a second. Contrary to Fillion’s memories of the director on set, an anonymous Firefly writer called Whedon out for publicly humiliating another writer for what he considered a poor script. This claim seemingly verified writer Jose Molina’s anecdote about Whedon’s pleasure in making female writers cry from the year prior. Fillion probably never experienced the inner workings of the writers’ room, so his relationship with Whedon as the show’s principal figure is dramatically different. The stalwart defense of Whedon’s character proves that Fillion enjoyed his job alongside the director.

Although Fillion expressed mainly positive memories of Whedon, it is critical to realize that he also did not diminish the accusers or deny their allegations. The director has purportedly directed his unprofessional and allegedly disgusting behavior toward women and people of color. Fillion is neither, so it’s no surprise he favorably recalls his time on Firefly since the claims against Whedon suggest he wouldn’t be a target. While their ongoing relationship could eventually lead to a Firefly revival, in the meantime, some fans want Fillion to play Wonder Man in the newly-announced Disney+ series.
