Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy says that a second season of the Disney+ hit miniseries Obi-Wan Kenobi is not out of the question.

Obi-Wan Kenobi Season 2 More Likely After Lucasfilm Comments

Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy says that Obi-Wan Kenobi season 2 is a very real possibility. The Disney+ miniseries premiered on May 27, 2022, and had a six-episode run. Ewan McGregor stars as the titular character as he attempts to rescue Princess Leia (Vivien Lyra Blair) from the Galactic Empire. Obi-Wan eventually crosses paths with his old padawan, Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christensen), who has turned to the dark side of the Force and become the Sith lord Darth Vader.

While originally conceived to be a spin-off film, Obi-Wan Kenobi was later reworked into a limited-run miniseries after Solo: A Star Wars Story performed lower at the box office than Lucasfilm had expected. The series’ director, Deborah Chow, stated that the series was designed to be “one big story with a beginning, middle, and end,” and that “the approach has always been that it is one full story.” The sixth and final episode of Obi-Wan Kenobi premiered on Disney+ on June 22, 2022.

In an interview with ET, Kennedy says that Lucasfilm is open to the idea of expanding Obi-Wan Kenobi beyond a single season. Although the project was initially considered to be a limited series, Kennedy says that if there’s enough fan engagement with the show and enough desire for a second season, Lucasfilm would consider it. Both Kennedy and Chow have stated that they would only do another season of Obi-Wan Kenobi if there was a “real reason for another one,” and if there was enough plot to necessitate it. Read Kennedy’s full comment below:

“Well, frankly, we did set out to do that as a limited series. But I think if there’s huge engagement and people really want more Obi-Wan, we’ll certainly give that consideration because the fans, they speak to us. And if we feel like, ‘OK, there’s a real reason to do this; it’s answering the why then,’ then we’ll do it. But we’ll see.”

Obi-Wan Kenobi is not the first Disney+ limited series to potentially evolve into a multi-season series. Similar to Kenobi, the Marvel series Moon Knight was also commissioned as a limited series. However, with the immense popularity and success of both shows, there have been rumors of second seasons being given to both — and there are certainly avid fans who would love to see these Disney+ series continue on.

While there is only so much time left between the end of Kenobi and the beginning of A New Hope, there is enthusiasm not only from fans to learn more of Obi-Wan’s story, but from the cast as well. Ewan McGregor himself has said that he hopes for another season and that he would be eager to return to the role of Obi-Wan Kenobi whenever the opportunity presents itself. Beloved by the Star Wars community, audiences are already asking for McGregor to return for a second season of Obi-Wan Kenobi – and while no concrete plans have been laid yet, Kennedy and Chow’s comments are certainly encouraging.
