Maisie Williams Believed Arya Stark Was ‘Queer,’ Was Shocked Over ‘GoT’ Sex Scene

While not many prominent characters from HBO’s famous series “Game of Throne” made it to the highly anticipated fight against the White Walkers, Maisie Williams’ Arya Stark was there in the heart of it, finally stifling the creature who was supposed to destroy them all.

Her tenacity, boldness, and strong will, as well as some other ungirly traits, were evident throughout the film prior to the battle, which, while admired by fans, left many perplexed about her sexuality.

However, when Arya is seen having sex with another character, Gendry Baratheon, in one scene, the rumors regarding her sexuality take a new turn, eliciting mixed emotions from fans because it was unexpected.

Williams has now spoken out about the incident, stating that it astonished her as well as she previously had a different assumption about her character’s sexuality.

Maisie Williams ‘Thought That Arya Was Queer’

Arya’s sex scene was a huge shocker for everyone, even Williams herself. On receiving the script for the episode and settling to read it, she was caught unawares by the sexual role her character would play, adding that she had thought Arya was queer.

“The first time I was surprised by Arya was probably in the final series, where she whips off her clothes and sleeps with Gendry,” Williams told Teen Vogue in a recent interview. “I thought that Arya was queer, you know?”

The sex scene was certainly a notable moment from all eight seasons, considering that it was the first time Arya did something Williams didn’t anticipate, having spent years playing the role. At the time, fans were more accustomed to seeing Arya reveal her secret deadly side, which she used against captors and would-be assassins, hence, making the quick rump all the more unexpected.

However, because HBO series are known for their numerous provocative scenes throughout the years, the scene might have been a minor element of the overall plot rather than a grand scheme to change viewers’ perceptions of Arya.

Maisie Williams Once Thought The Scene Was A Prank

Williams’ recent revelation about her shock on getting the sex scene script only pointed out her assumptions about Arya being queer. In a prior interview, the actress revealed that she had rather felt it was all a prank.

“At first, I thought it was a prank,” as per Esquire. “I was like, ‘Yo, good one.’ And [the showrunners were] like, ‘No, we haven’t done that this year.’ Oh f—k!”

Williams added about the sex scene: “It [was] interesting to see Arya be a bit more human, speak more normally about things people are scared of.”

For actor Joe Dempsey who played Gendry the scene was rather strange for him given that he had known Williams since “she was 11, 12 years old.” He however added that rather than allow things to get awkward they “just had a lot of fun with it.”

When Did Arya Stark’s Sex Scene Happen?

Arya’s sex scene took place in Season 8, Episode 2 of the blockbuster series, the night before the fight against the White Walkers in Winterfell. Maisie’s character had recently reconnected with Gentry, whom she had parted ways with back in season three when they were both children.

Gentry would create a dragon glass weapon for Arya to use in fighting the White Walkers before she then asked about his sexual experience during their time apart. Finally, she informs him of her desire to have sex before she dies, believing this was her last chance to experience such pleasures, as the struggle against the White Walkers the next day seemed ominous.

Arya pulled off her clothes and mounted Gendry but the actual intercourse is not shown as the scene changes. Later, the camera switched to them lying in bed after the act just as the White Walkers began to arrive at Winterfell’s Walls.

The Reactions

After the episode went on air, viewers’ reactions to the scene were mixed as some thought it had been a long time coming while others felt it was out of place and completely unnecessary. At the time, Insider writer Callie Ahlgrim summed up her views by saying, “Given Arya’s development over the course of the series, the sex scene felt out of character for many viewers — and even a bit gratuitous,”

In retrospect, it’s still uncertain whether Arya’s character is still queer, as one sexual experience may not be enough to determine one’s sexuality. Perhaps Arya is bisexual, although this isn’t established by the storyline, which solely mentions Gentry as her lone sexual partner.

Despite the controversy that has surrounded the series since its conclusion, “Game of Thrones” remains arguably one of the finest television shows of the twenty-first century. The epic story that unfolded in Westeros is still being rewatched by audiences all over the world.
