Deadpool Will Fit Into The MCU As A Fish-Out-Of-Water Comedy, Screenwriters Say

Deadpool 3 screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick have revealed more details on how the merc with a mouth will be integrated into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The MCU films are much more family-friendly and toned down in comparison to 20th Century Fox’s Deadpool movies, something that the writers say will allow for Deadpool’s core characteristics to shine.
“I think it presents a wonderful opportunity for fish-out-of-water [comedy]. Deadpool is a lunatic at the center of a movie,” Reese said to Post Cred Pop. “Usually, the lunatics are the supporting character and the protagonist is reasonably sane, and our movie is flipped. So to drop a lunatic into a very sane world, it’s just like straight butter. It’s going to be really fun.”

Reese added that with over two dozen films in the MCU library so far, there was more than enough content for the writers to poke fun at through the lens of Deadpool, a character known for his abrasive personality and a dark sense of humor that’s in stark contrast to the cleaner heroes of that film franchise. After 20th Century Fox was acquired by Disney, Reese and Wernick remarked that Disney was still prepared to “let Deadpool be Deadpool” and that, as of yet, Disney has only shown the Deadpool franchise “nothing but support.”
While Deadpool 3 is still in development, the next MCU film debuts next month.
Thor: Love and Thunder hits theaters on July 8, and reunites Chris Hemsworth’s Asgardian character with Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster, who is now also wielding the power of the thunder god. Christian Bale makes his MCU debut in the film as Gorr the God Butcher, a nuanced role that Hemsworth says makes the character his favorite villain of all time–even if he isn’t wearing a G-string on the big screen.
