Morbius Is Finally A Hit… At The Last Blockbuster
After failing at the box office not once, but twice, Sony's recent Morbius movie finally finds success at the very last Blockbuster store.

Morbius Is Finally A Hit… At The Last Blockbuster

Morbius has finally become a relative hit at the world’s last Blockbuster store. Located in Bend, Oregon, the last Blockbuster is the final DVD and video rental store of its kind. The last blockbuster is the subject of a hilarious Twitter account of the same name, where the store posts both self-deprecating and self-congratulatory content riffing off its existence, after Blockbusters closed in droves over a decade ago.

Morbius, on the other hand, is somewhat of a modern failure. The Sony/Marvel movie stars Jared Leto as Dr. Michael Morbius — a man who, in an attempt to cure himself of a rare blood disease, infects himself with something causing a form of vampirism. When Morbius hit theaters for the first time, it was both a critical and box office flop, vastly underperforming its mainstream MCU competitors. This lackluster reception was not the end of Morbius, however. The film inspired countless memes and parodies across the internet (including the popular “it’s Morbin’ time”) and a joking demand for Morbius 2, leading Sony to re-release the film in theaters. It was then that Morbius accomplished something that few films had done before: flopping at the box office not once, but twice.

Rather than succeeding in either of its theatrical releases, Morbius has finally found a home at the last Blockbuster. A Twitter post from user Don McHoull revealed a picture of Morbius DVDs on display at the rental store. According to the post, there are 16 copies of Morbius available for rent at the last Blockbuster. So far, six copies have been taken out. Check it out below:

Given Morbius’ recent double box office flop, renting out nearly half of its DVD copies represents a smashing success for the Sony project. In fact, some have argued that there is something almost meta about Morbius being a hit at the last Blockbuster. The store itself is the subject of internet memes and is constantly at the risk of failure. For an overly-memed film like Morbius to find success there seems to be too comedically perfect, given the status of the sardonic DVD rental store.

This newfound Morbius success is a testament to the extravagant failures the film has undergone along its journey to the big screen. Even for a film outside of the mainstream MCU franchise, it is rare for a Marvel-based film to perform so poorly both financially and critically. Unfortunately, even with the meme-attracted attention, Morbius could not even garner enough buzz for audiences to go and see it in theaters ironically. Ultimately, it looks like Morbius‘ biggest success will remain at the last Blockbuster.
