If You Read These 10 TikTok Viral Books, You’ll Be Happy To Know They’re Being Adapted In TV Shows And Movies

Honestly, the only thing that got me through this past year were the never-ending, spot-on recommendations from BookTok. Inevitably, when I found out that some of these books were coming to screens, my to-watch list only started to grow. Below you’ll find 10 BookTok books being adapted to movies or TV shows.

1. The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid

Quill Tree Books

Synopsis: Mateo and Rufus are in a similar predicament — they are both “Deckers,” meaning they only have one day to live. After receiving the call from Death-Cast about this news, they find each other on Last Friend, an app that connects Deckers so that no one spends their last day alone.

This novel is coming to the small screens. Drew Comins of Creative Engine Entertainment will be the Executive Producer of the series, with author Adam Silvera writing the script. It’s still in its early stage of development, so no details about the cast or release date have been released yet.

4. Normal People by Sally Rooney

Hogarth Press

Synopsis: Marianne Sheridan and Connell Waldron are both damaged, but this allows them to develop a relationship almost no one else understands. Their pain is translated into an intense passion for each other. Normal People subtly comments on the influence of social class while giving life to the intoxicating feelings of a person’s first love.

No need to wait, Sally Rooney fans, this novel is already a TV series on Hulu. The series has 12 episodes and the story is pretty similar to the book. The main difference I noticed was that Marianne’s relationships are more elaborate and fleshed out. The series goes more in-depth of Marianne’s boyfriends, which allows viewers to understand her character better. If you love the book, you’re going to love the series; the cast, script, cinematography are all just as imagined.

5. The Summer I Turned Pretty by Jenny Han

Simon & Schuster

Synopsis: To Belly, Jeremiah and Conrad, are more than her best friends. They’ve been so many of her “firsts:” her first crushes, brother-figures, and more. Every year, they spend time together at the boys’ summer beach house in Cousins Beach. But one summer changes everything, and it’s what uncovers the truth behind their relationships. Are they all just friends or is there a love triangle going around?

To be honest, I liked The Summer I Turned Pretty series more than the To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before series, so I super excited when Jenny Han announced this adaptation. The series is set as a long form TV series, with the first season having 7 episodes. You can stream Season 1 on Amazon Prime now.

6. Red, White, and Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston

St. Martin’s Griffin

Synopsis: If you’re looking for a sweet, secret romance, look no further: Red, White, and Royal Blue is the perfect pick for you. Prince Henry of Wales and First Son Alex Claremont-Diaz are royals in the political sphere, but they’re also childhood enemies. But when a tabloid leak could threaten British/American relations, Henry and Alex are the plans for damage control. Suddenly, they’re thrust into a fake friendship to prove the media wrong. But they soon realize their feelings may run deeper than just a friendship.

Although a release date hasn’t been set, the casting has been confirmed. Nicolas Galitzine, Prince Robert in Cinderella, will be starring as Prince Henry and Taylor Zakhar Perez, best known for his role as Marco Pena in The Kissing Booth 3, will be playing Alex. It will also premiere on Amazon Prime.

7. The Selection by Kiera Cass

Harperteen

Synopsis: Thirty-six girls are vying for the heart of Prince Maxon Schreave in The Selection. America Singer has been chosen to participate in this event of the decade, but the problem? She has no interest in this whole thing, much less winning over Maxon. But after realizing that she needs to stay for her family, she decides to strike a deal with Maxon. That deal is only first of her and Maxon’s relationship.

This series is by far my favorite of all time — I’ve read the first three books at least 80 times (sorry Eadlyn, I’m an America fan). So it was super exciting when Kiera Cass announced that the TV series would follow America’s journey. Netflix has the production rights, but it’s been in the early stages of production since April of 2020. There aren’t any details on the cast or release date, but Pouya Shahbazian, producer, did say that they already have the script, they just need the green light to actually produce the series.

8. A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Mass

Bloomsbury Publishing

Synopsis: To Feyre, a 19-year-old huntress, hunting is just an everyday part of life. But, when she kills a wolf, a terrifying beast comes to avenge it. She’s taken captive to a magical land, where she discovers the truth behind her captor, Tamlin. He’s not the beast he presents himself to be, rather, he’s one of the immortal and powerful faeries that rules her land. In the midst of it all, an evil ancient power is growing and she must find a way to save her world.

Back in March of 2021, Sarah Mass announced that the script was being written with Ron Moore, creator of Outlander. Although there’s no details on the casting or release date, we do know that Hulu will be airing the series.

9. Heartstopper by Alice Oseman

Graphix

Synopsis: Charlie Spring has a crush on Nick Nelson, a boy completely opposite of him. Charlie is shy, soft-hearted, and easily stressed, whereas Nick is a rugby player and laid back. Spending more and more time together, they realize their feelings for each other run deeper than just friendship. This book captures not only Nick and Charlie’s relationship, but their relationship in the context of friends around them, making it an all-around captivating and heartwarming book.

Like Normal People, this series is available to stream now. The storylines are generally the same, except for a few new changes in the timing of certain events and development of characters. The biggest change, however, is that Isaac and Imogen are introduced with Aled being removed. Watch all 8 episodes on Netflix now.

10. Conversations with Friends by Sally Rooney

Hogarth Press

Synopsis: Sally Rooney’s debut novel is nothing short of two young women finding their way in the world. Best friends Frances and Bobbi have been best friends for a long time — but they also hook up. Conversations with Friends explores themes of womanhood, sexuality, and the messy meaning of friendship.

It’s no shock that both of Sally Rooney’s bestselling books are on this list — they’re famous for a reason! In Conversations with Friends, Rooney’s painfully intimate writing is directly translated into the perfect casting and screenplay. There are a couple differences from the novel and the show, but it doesn’t pert from the novel’s overall themes and messages. All 12 episodes of the show are on Hulu.
