President Joe Biden Says The ‘Health & Life’ Of Women In The U.S. Is ‘Now At Risk’

President Joe Biden denounced SCOTUS' decision to overturn Roe v. Wade and make abortion harder for women to access.

On Friday, President Joe Biden commented on the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade.

As expected from the Supreme Court draft opinion leak earlier this year, the Supreme Court did indeed reverse the 1973 landmark ruling that guaranteed a right to medical abortions in the United States. The Supreme Court ruled the decision 6-3, granting states the ability to decide for themselves whether or not to allow abortion. However, over twenty states already have trigger laws in effect and are poised to enact statewide bans on women’s healthcare.

In a speech made shortly after the initial announcement, President Biden claimed that the recent SCOTUS decision was taking America back 150 years.

In his speech, Biden said that “The court laid out state laws criminalizing abortion that go back to the 1800s of rationale,” adding, “The court is literally taking American back 150 years.”

“It’s a sad day for the country, in my view,” he added. Biden felt that “Roe v. Wade was the correct decision, as a matter of constitutional law,” adding that the “health and life” of women in the United States is “now at risk” due to abortion restrictions that states are set to impose.

Planned Parenthood President Alexis McGill Johnson took to Twitter to praise Biden’s comments. She tweeted, “Thank you, @POTUS for speaking out and committing to act to address this abortion crisis. We look forward to seeing more actions in the coming days/months. We need our elected officials at all levels to do everything in their power to reduce the impact of today’s SCOTUS decision.”

President Barack Obama Joins Joe Biden In Condemning SCOTUS Decision

Former President Barack Obama also weighed in on Twitter. He tweeted, “Today, the Supreme Court not only reversed nearly 50 years of precedent, it relegated the most intensely personal decision someone can make to the whims of politicians and ideologues—attacking the essential freedoms of millions of Americans.”

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis posted a statement to Twitter to show his support for the decision.

He began his statement by saying that “prayers of millions have been answered” and indicated that Florida will “continue to defend its recently-enacted pro-life reforms against state court challenges, will work to expand pro-life protections, and will stand for life by promoting adoption, foster care, and child welfare.”

However, Planned Parenthood and many other women’s organizations are not ready to throw in the towel just yet. Even if states are planning abortion bans, they encourage women who are seeking an abortion to call 1-800-230-PLAN to get the medical help they need, regardless of location.
