Umbrella Academy Star Reveals What He Hopes For Diego In Season 4

The Umbrella Academy star, David Castañeda, opened up about what he hopes for his character, Diego, in season 4. The Umbrella Academy is a Netflix original series that first premiered in 2019 and recently dropped its third season. The series follows the superpowered Hargreeves siblings, who were 7 of 43 children born on the same day to women who weren’t previously pregnant. They were adopted by eccentric billionaire, Sir Reginald Hargreeves (Colm Feore), who established them as a superhero team – the Umbrella Academy. However, due to time travel and their actions in the 1960s in season 2, the Hargreeves vastly altered the timeline in the present day in season 3.

The Hargreeves return to their timeline to find that Reginald never adopted them, but instead adopted seven different children and named them the Sparrow Academy. Also, Reginald and their brother, Ben (Justin H. Min), are now alive after previously being deceased. The season sees them exploring the altered timeline and realizing that their actions in the past caused a grandfather paradox in the present day, as well as created a dangerous kugelblitz. However, it’s Diego that is in for the biggest surprise when he learns he has an alleged son in this timeline with Lila (Ritu Arya).

In an interview with TV Insider, Castañeda opened up about what his hopes are for Diego in season 4. Season 3 ended with some big changes in his life and saw him shifting from his previous vigilante self into more of a family man. As for Castañeda, he would like to see Diego experiencing something different in season 4, particularly by exploring his culture and surrounding himself with some Spanish-speaking folks. Check out his statement below:

I would really like to see him interact with a lot of people that speak Spanish and just see him out of his element in a different culture.

As of now, The Umbrella Academy has not been renewed for a fourth season, however; the creators are holding out for a renewal. There certainly are a lot of loose ends that need to be tied up, and Castañeda’s statement gives insight into what season 4 could look like, at least for Diego. Exploring his culture would certainly be intriguing, as there hasn’t been much focus on his Latino heritage. However, season 3 did include one scene in which he breaks into his native language while arguing with Ben about the kugelblitz. Now that Diego is exploring a different side of himself and a different path of life, it certainly would be appealing to see him return back to his roots.

Diego is one character in The Umbrella Academy who has shown the most growth and change. He started out as an angry, knife-flinging vigilante who didn’t get along with his siblings and hated his father. However, as he explores the idea of having his own family, there may be more understanding in his attitude going forward. What is clear, though, is that Diego needs to get away from The Umbrella Academy. The trauma he experienced as a child is clearly still impacting him severely, and he has never been too crazy about the superhero lifestyle. Just as Castañeda hopes, it would be great to see Diego out of his element and exploring a different culture that feels more like home to him in The Umbrella Academy season 4.
