Inside Aaron And Sam Taylor-Johnson’s Decade Long Love Story And Marriage

Director Sam Taylor-Johnson and actor Aaron Taylor-Johnson are one of Hollywood’s power couples and are pretty much couple goals. They have been married for over a decade, after getting engaged a year after they first met, and are still going strong as ever.

Although they usually keep details of their relationships under wraps, they tend to gush about each other when giving interviews.

Here is a quick peek into their very private relationship.

They Met At Aaron’s ‘Nowhere Boy’ Audition

The pair met in 2008 when Aaron came to audition for Sam’s 2009 movie, “Nowhere Boy.” Although the actor’s age was not known at the time, Sam was 42 years of age.

According to their interview in The Sunday Times (Via Insider), the director admitted that they almost did not meet as Aaron’s audition was scheduled when Sam was moving out of the home where she cohabited with ex-husband Jay Jopling. Because she wanted to be present, Sam invited him over to her house for the audition.

“It was so inconvenient,” Sam said. “In the end, I was like, ‘OK, he’ll have to come to my home.’ I opened my door to John Lennon. I instantly knew he was the guy.”

Sam shared with The Telegraph UK that she was impressed by his readiness and preparedness for his audition.

“I could see how much research he’d done already just by the way he was standing and the few words he said,” she recalled.

Aaron, on the other hand, reminisced of his audition with Harper’s Bazaar, sharing that he still remembered how Sam looked during the audition.

“I remember it very, very clearly,” he said. “I know exactly what she was wearing. This white shirt that she still has, that I love. It changed my life, though not in the way I expected.”

They Got Engaged After Shooting The Movie

Although they clicked from the start and had instantaneous chemistry, they kept things professional in the movie’s location.

“We were very professional through the entire film,” the duo shared with Harper’s Bazaar in 2019. “No funny business at all.”

In 2009, Aaron proposed to Sam. This came immediately after the movie was completed.

“As soon as we finished, he told me he was going to marry me. We had never been on a date or even kissed.”

Aaron told The Telegraph UK that immediately after he met her, he knew she was the one he wanted to spend the rest of his life with.

“I knew I wanted a family with her, I wanted kids, and a month later, she was pregnant with our first child. And a year to the minute after we met, exactly one year to the minute, I got down on one knee and asked her to marry me,” he said.

The Taylor-Johnson’s Had Their First Child In 2010

Months after they announced their engagement, the pair confirmed that they were expecting their first child together.

“We can confirm that Sam is pregnant with her and Aaron’s first child. Both are very happy,” a spokesman for the couple shared.

Before that, Aaron had appeared on “Friday Night With Johnathan Ross,” where he revealed that he wasn’t nervous about having their first child as he was already acting as a stepfather to Sam’s two daughters from her marriage to Jopling.

In the later months of the year 2010, the pair welcomed their first child, Wylda Rae. An official statement that announced this news and expressed their happiness was obtained on behalf of the couple. At the time, Aaron was 20, while Sam was 43.

Two years after, the pair welcomed their second child, Rony Hero. This news was confirmed in a statement obtained by People, which also specified that “mother and daughter were doing well.”

The Pair Got Married & Changed Their Last Names

After almost three years of announcing their engagement, the duo eventually tied the nuptial knot. It took place in a Somerset church, automatically changing their last names into Taylor-Johnson.

“I don’t see why women need to take the man’s name. I wanted to be a part of her just as much as she wanted to be part of me,” the actor shared of the name change.

He also shared how important it was to him that his name is written as Taylor-Johnson in the credits of any movie he played in.

“Actually, I wanted it on ‘Savages’ as well, but they told me the posters had already gone out,” he said, referring to one of the movies he released in the early months of 2012. “Then they said: ‘Look, we hired Aaron Johnson.'”

He also shared that he fought for his hyphenated name to be updated in his “Anna Karenina” movie.

“I said: ‘I want it changed! This is important,'” he recalled. “It felt beautiful, It felt right.”
