Channing Tatum Says He ‘Wasn’t Sure Of How To Raise A Strong Little Girl’

From being an Olympic wrestler to a GI Joe to being a cop posing as a high school student, Hollywood star Channing Tatum has done it all. However, one role he was afraid to take on was the role of a single father to his beautiful daughter, Everly.

Since his split from his ex-wife and “Step-Up” co-star, Jenna Dewan, in 2018, he has learned to conquer his fears about being a single father.

Before this, he was initially worried about raising his daughter and recently opened up to Fatherly about the challenges he faced and his parenting journey in its entirety.

Read on for more details about the disclosure.

In a recent interview with Fatherly, the “Lost” actor opened up about his parenting journey with his nine-year-old Everly Tatum, whom he shares with ex-wife Dewan.

He confessed that at the start of this journey, he wasn’t sure what to do and was initially afraid of fatherhood.

“I know that I liked to act and play make-believe and magical things, but I just didn’t know if I would be able to meet her on her level, especially now that I’m a single dad.”

The actor also added he was scared of being unable to handle things as a mother would. “I was doubly afraid,” he disclosed. “Was I going to be able to do any of the things a mother should do? That a mother, as a woman, can relate to her as?”

He also shared that he and his dad didn’t have the best relationship and didn’t want the kind of relationship with his daughter, whom he described as “contrarian.”

“I wasn’t sure what to do with a little strong little girl. I grew up very, very, very different from her.”

However, as his parenting journey unfolded, it dawned on him that all he had to do was “go into her world and do whatever that is that Everly wanted him to do.”

“If she likes dragons, I’ll go be a dragon. If she likes witches, I’ll become a warlock.”

He even added that he was no longer afraid of connecting with his child, and they were now “best of friends.”

It’d appear that their bond has only continued to grow stronger and stronger. Tatum posted a picture on his Instagram to celebrate his daughter’s ninth birthday last June. The picture featured the pair at the beach and was captioned,

“You, my littles, are everything! You are my world and my heart. You were looking at the full moon in this pic and telling me the prophecy of the full moon mermaid, and then we ran into the water and looked for her and played with glow sticks in the night water, calling out to the mermaids.”

He also added a caption where his daughter told him she touched a “bald mermaid” and “saw a tail.”

“Haha, one day you will read this, and I hope you laugh. We have fun,” he concluded.

In May 2021, the actor wrote his first children’s book,

“The One and Only Sparkella.” He dedicated the book to his daughter and was the first of the series.

He also shared with Parents that the book was inspired by the time he spent with his daughter in lockdown and added that the main character shared major similarities with his daughter.

“Just like Sparkella, Evie loves to play tricks, wear crazy outfits and be different from everyone. She’s bold, beautiful, and magical in every way. We played a lot in her room over quarantine, which helped flesh out the story.”

The second book of the series, “The One And Only Sparkella Makes A Plan,” was also released this year.

In the same interview, he opened up to Fatherly about things he had learned over the years in his parenting stint.

“You don’t even need to be cute. You could just put on the dress and still be yourself,” he shared. “It’s just going to be even funnier to them. Like you could be as grumpy and tough and whatever you want to be, wear the tiara.”

He also shared that there were things he also wanted to teach his daughter, but most importantly, he wanted to teach her how to “live freely and find the thing in every moment.”
