‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’ Finale Draws In More Viewers Than ‘The Book Of Boba Fett’

It seems “Obi-Wan Kenobi” still managed to bring in an audience.

Despite receiving almost as much criticism as the prequel trilogy did upon their release, Deadline reported on Monday that the first season of the Star Wars Disney+ live-action series drew in a 20% higher viewership than “The Book of Boba Fett.”

‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’ Finale Viewership Drops To Under 2 Million Households

The data below comes from Samba TV, which measures streaming viewership in households in the U.S. that have watched a show for at least five minutes.

The finale of the six-episode limited series of “Obi-Wan Kenobi” drew in a five-day total of 1.8 million households. This is 20% higher than the five-day total for “The Book of Boba Fett” finale, which was only watched by 1.5 million households, according to the data.

However, “Obi-Wan Kenobi” had a much steeper drop in viewership. The show premiered on May 30 in time to coincide with the annual Star Wars Celebration fan event and brought in 2.14 million viewers. This did even better than the premiere of season 2 of “The Mandalorian,” which brought in 2.08 million.

In contrast, “The Book of Boba Fett” premiere only brought in 1.5 million viewers, so there was only a very minor drop from the first episode to the finale. In contrast, Marvel’s “Moon Knight” series, which was led by “Star Wars” alum Oscar Isaac (Poe Dameron in the sequel trilogy), performed only slightly better with 1.6 million viewers.

Marvel’s “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” was one of the best performing Disney+ series in terms of total viewership. The premiere drew in 1.8 million households and the finale drew in 1.7 million households, which is only slightly less than the “Obi-Wan Kenobi” finale brought in.

Deadline reported that, of the top 25 largest markets, Seattle had indexed the most (+46%) for “Obi-Wan Kenobi,” followed by Denver (+41%), and Sacramento (+22%).

Will ‘Kenobi’ Receive A Second Season?

Disney+

Back in May, star Ewan McGregor and several Lucasfilm execs sat down with Entertainment Weekly to discuss the possibility of a second season.

Writer Joby Harold told EW that he doesn’t know if there’s “a story beyond the story we’re telling now.”

“With these things, we always think of it as a complete story with the beginning and a middle and an end,” he explained. “And so we very much thought of it in that way, as its own story, its own narrative, its own journey for this character between Episode III and Episode IV.”

Director Deborah Chow also told the outlet, “It was definitely conceived as a limited series and it is one big story with a beginning, middle, and end. So that’s the way we’ve always approached it. The approach has always been that it is one full story.”

When they asked Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy, she said “It’s certainly something we talk about, mainly because everybody came together and had such an incredible time. Ewan had an incredible time. Hayden had an incredible time.”

Kennedy continued, “So certainly from that point of view, everybody involved would love to see this not end. But we have to really spend our time asking the question: Why would we do it? If we were to decide to do anything more with the Obi-Wan Kenobi character, we’d have to really answer the question why?”

The Emmy-award-winning actor Ewan McGregor said that “It was made as a one-off limited series and, in a way, it does do what I wanted it to do in terms of bridging a story between III and IV and bringing me closer to Alec Guinness’ Obi-Wan in A New Hope.” But when asked directly if he would like there to be a second season of “Obi-Wan Kenobi,” he replied, “Yeah, I would like to make another one.”

“I had such a great time working with Deb, and the actors that we had in this were so great to work with, and the crew are just… I can’t tell you,” he continued. “It was so wonderful to work on. I couldn’t wait to get to work every day, and on a long shoot like this, that’s something. Right to the end, I just loved the experience of it.”

“Obi-Wan Kenobi” is currently available to stream in its entirety on Disney+.
