17 Characters Who We Love, But Probably Wouldn’t Want To Be Friends With

We recently asked members of the BuzzFeed Community to tell us some characters who, when they really thought about it, were actually bad friends. Here’s who they said.

1. Bella from Twilight

HBO

“She was always whining about her own problems, and she didn’t even care about what was happening in her friend’s lives. It’s been some time since I watched the show so I could be a little off, but I remember when Samantha told her that she had cancer — Carrie spent like 10 seconds on her and then went right to her problem.”

4. Betty from Riverdale

The CW / Netflix

“Remember when Veronica lent her like $100,000 with no questions? Meanwhile, Betty was cheating on Jughead with Veronica’s boyfriend and never checked in on her.”

—luna_loola

5. Rory from Gilmore Girls

The WB

“There were times where she was a really good friend to Lane and Paris, but when she first started dating Dean in the first season, SHE SUCKED! She neglected Lane ALL THE TIME and never listened to what she wanted to do or had to say. Lane was always such a good friend to Rory and listened to her stories and all her family drama, but Rory barely did the same unless she wanted to say something in reaction. Thankfully, Lane did let her feelings be known, and Rory did become a better friend. Lane Kim is the best character, PERIOD!”

6. Howard from The Big Bang Theory

CBS

“Howard (but pretty much everyone else) was super toxic to Raj. They made fun of his sexuality, his choice in women, his accent, his culture, his job, his disability, his relationship with his dog! Even when he opened up to the others, they either just got him drunk or ignored him because they didn’t want to hear him.”

7. Elena from The Vampire Diaries

The CW

“She ran around acting like she was so selfless but didn’t care at all about her friends’ lives. She also always acted like she had the monopoly on emotions and feeling heartbroken about things, so everyone else had to comfort her.”

—emmbeaa

“She was a terrible friend, especially to Bonnie — she always expected her to fix everything and didn’t think about how it affected her. She didn’t even know she was dead for months!”

—mbalikmpofu

8. Effy from Skins

E4

“As much as people love to glorify her as this aesthetic queen, we forget that she was such a shitty friend — Pandora tried her hardest to be there for her, and Effy just ruined her birthday, and she also came between Cook and Freddie.”

—unicornnida

9. Otis from Sex Education

Netflix

“Yes, he grew and developed, but in the first season, Eric was such a dedicated best friend, and he just dropped him as soon as something more exciting came up. The birthday episode was heartbreaking.”

10. Lily from How I Met Your Mother

CBS

“She was a horrible friend to all of them. She ruined Ted’s relationships and job because ‘she knew best.’ She dumped Marshall and then just expected him to get back with her. And she broke up Ted and Robin!”

—susiebear

11. And of course, Ted from HIMYM

CBS

“Yes, he claimed to love his friends, but he basically just used them as a sounding board to moan about how he couldn’t find a girlfriend. And even when he did seem to care about their problems, nothing was ever as important to him as his own romantic relationships. Also, Barney was trash, but at least he was pretty upfront about being awful.”

—bexsticles

12. Tom from Parks and Recreation

NBC

“He consistently prioritised his own wishes and his personal success, often at his friends’ expense.”

—heiroffire

13. Nick from New Girl

Fox

“He was insanely selfish, lazy, and ignorant of the things going on in his friends’ lives. There is literally an episode where all Schmidt wants is for Nick to say that he loves him, but he won’t! He also only cares about his own problems, and whenever the others ask for his help he has an excuse for why he can’t help them, or why the problem is dumb.”

14. Erin from Derry Girls

Channel 4

“She is so unkind to Claire. I get that Claire can be annoying, but some of the things Erin says are just mean for the sake of being mean. I’m also still mad that it was never addressed properly how Erin rejected her when Claire first came out to her… They ‘united’ to stop Orla from being bullied and seemed to be friends again, but never actually addressed what Erin said to Claire.

That said I do love Derry Girls, and I do think it is OK to have friends that are unlikable in shows. I wouldn’t be friends with them, but they do sometimes make shows entertaining and more realistic. You don’t have to like the characters to like the show.”

—jazsesy

15. Smithy from Gavin and Stacy

BBC

“Every time I watch the show I roll my eyes with his tantrums. Gavin finds a woman he loves and moves up in his career and marriage, which means making big decisions, and Smithy always has to be talked around until he’s OK with it. After Gavin returned from his honeymoon, all Smithy did was complain, just because he’d turned his phone off. And he’d always insult the others when drunk. My list could go on. Just selfish!”

—somenortherner

16. Emma from Once Upon a Time

ABC

“She constantly doubted Regina’s intentions, despite the fact that she repeatedly told the heroes she was trying to change. Emma brought Regina’s true love’s wife back from the dead, and then had the nerve to be surprised when she broke down and closed herself off. Even way back in the beginning, she took the one thing Regina loved in the world — her son. And I get it — the whole story wouldn’t have happened if Emma hadn’t decided to stay in Storybrooke, but when the curse broke, Emma stole him away, leaving Regina on her own.”

17. Harry from the Harry Potter series

Warner Bros. Pictures

“Look, I know he’s ‘The Chosen One’ and all that, but he was so self-centred! Ron and Hermione made so many sacrifices so that he could reach his goals, but he never really seemed grateful — Hermione literally erased herself from her parents’ memories! Not to mention the fact that he was really rich and he just watched as Ron struggled through second year with a broken wand that his family probably couldn’t afford to replace.”
