On Wednesday morning, the Toronto International Film Festival’s official Twitter page announced that Rian Johnson’s “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” will make its world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival this September. The festival runs from September 8 through September 18, but it’s not clear exactly when the film will make its debut.

This will be the festival’s first fully in-person event since the COVID-19 pandemic began two years ago. Last year, Kenneth Branagh’s “Belfast” won the TIFF People’s Choice Award and later ended up with seven Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture.

This is only the first of two sequels that Johnson secured in a deal with Netflix. As Deadline reported, the deal is estimated to be worth more than $400 million dollars for both “Knives Out 2” and “Knives Out 3,” making it one of the biggest deals in the steamer’s history.

Netflix has yet to reveal when “Glass Onion” will hit its platform, but rumors have suggested that a holiday release is likely. There are likely to be many more announcements to come, as it was less than two weeks ago that Rian Johnson revealed the name of the sequel on Twitter.

Earlier this month, “The Last Jedi” director teased the name of his latest murder mystery by talking about the movie’s origins. “Something I love about Agatha Christie is how she never tread water creatively,” he began. “I think there’s a misperception that her books use the same formula over and over, but fans know the opposite is true.”

It wasn’t just settings or murder methods, she was constantly stretching the genre conceptually. Under the umbrella of the whodunnit she wrote spy thrillers, proto-slasher horrors, serial killer hunts, gothic romances, psychological character studies, glam travelogues.

When I made Knives Out, that’s what excited me about the prospect of making more mysteries with Daniel as Benoit Blanc – to emulate Christie and have every film be like a whole new book, with its own tone, ambition, reason for being… and (ta dah) title.
