Details for Young Sheldon season 5’s penultimate episode hint at a fight between George (Lance Barber) and Pastor Rob (Dan Byrd). The Big Bang Theory prequel’s current season has only two episodes left and CBS is starting to bring certain plotlines that have been developing throughout the season to their climax. That includes the brewing conflict between George and Mary (Zoe Perry) about her growing closeness with her church co-worker.
It has been a difficult last few weeks for the Coopers as they focus on how to tackle Georgie’s (Montana Jordan) situation. In Young Sheldon‘s 100th episode, it was revealed that the eldest Cooper kid accidentally got his girlfriend pregnant. George and Mary have been arguing about the next course of action for the couple; she wants them to get married but he doesn’t think that it’s the right call. Georgie and Mandy’s (Emily Osment) current predicament has also effectively forced the Cooper couple to re-examine their relationship since they were once in the same situation. Unfortunately, their already fragile marriage will encounter a new problem as Rob becomes closer with Mary — something that has already been a source of jealousy for George after he caught them smoking secretly on church premises.
The Cooper patriarch has yet to confront Mary about this and that may be a source of friction when George finally comes face-to-face with Rob in Young Sheldon season 5’s penultimate episode. The outing titled “White Trash, Holy Rollers and Punching People” hints at a fight going down in the episode. But while the official synopsis of the episode reveals Missy (Raegan Revord) punching a boy to defend Georgie, who has been the talk of the town, it’s also possible that it can be a reference to what goes down between George and Rob. In a Young Sheldon promo clip, Rob is seen visiting Mary at home and unabashedly flirts with her. If George catches him under his own roof doing this, it isn’t outside the realm of possibility that he loses his cool and goes after him. This incident can result in Mary being fired from his job in her church which is already confirmed to happen in the Young Sheldon season 5 finale.
For what it’s worth, it isn’t lost on George that Mary tends to listen to Rob’s thoughts more than her own husband. On the heels of Georgie’s news, Mary decides to share the news with her colleague, despite originally telling Sheldon (Iain Armitage) and Missy to not blab about the situation. Granted that everyone else in the family shared the news with their respective confidantes, the fact that Mary didn’t come clean about who she blabbed it with hints that she wasn’t confident about who she confided with. Later on, when George learned what Rob told Mary, he rightfully pointed out that he essentially said the same thing, so it was a wonder why Mary seemed to agree with the sentiment just because her workmate said it. This presumably added to George’s secret grudge about Mary’s tendency to lean more on Rob than her own husband.
Regardless, the existence of Rob in Mary’s life in Young Sheldon will create problems in her marriage. Perhaps, it’s even how George will justify his own cheating scandal. But with Mary losing her job at her church, it’s curious if her friendship with Rob will continue beyond season 5 or if that also effectively breaks all their ties with each other.
