Ray Donovan Star Liev Schreiber Discusses The Possibility Of A Reboot

Liev Schreiber has discussed a potential Ray Donovan reboot. Schreiber was cast as the show’s titular character in 2013 and was backed by an impressive cast, including Paula Malcolmson, Eddie Marson, Dash Mihok, Pooch Hall and Jon Voight. The weekly exploits of Ray Donovan, a Hollywood fixer who goes to extreme lengths to protect his celebrity clients, ran until season 7 from 2013 to 2020 before being cancelled by Showtime. Ray Donovan‘s cancellation garnered backlash from fans, critics and the series’ cast, ultimately leading to the release of Ray Donovan: The Moviewhich premiered earlier this year.

Prior to being cast on the show, Schreiber was primarily known to audiences as a supporting actor with roles in films such as The Hurricane, Scream, The Manchurian Candidate and X:Men Origins: Wolverine. Ray Donovan was a huge boost for the actor’s career and proved that he was a formidable leading man. His performance on the show was lauded by audiences and critics, earning him five Golden Globe Awards nominations for “Best Actor in a Television Series Drama” and three Primetime Emmy Awards nominations for “Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series.” Ray Donovan: The Movie was Schreiber’s final appearance as the titular character, and prior to the film’s release, the actor made comments suggesting he was done with the role. However, that may no longer be the case.

According to Variety, Schreiber recently appeared at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. There, the actor was asked if he was open to reprising the role of Ray Donovan in a future reboot. Schreiver admitted that he would “consider” the idea, saying:

“I would consider it. It was always David Nevin’s baby. I know he loves this character and this story, and I wouldn’t be surprised if we hear more from David.”

Schreiber’s encouraging comments about Ray Donovan didn’t stop there, as the actor also recalled the stability the series provided his family at the time, and fondly remembered working behind the scenes in writing, directing and casting. While the show remains a fan-favorite, there has been no indication from Showtime that the network is interested in a Ray Donovan reboot. Furthermore, Schreiber himself may not be able to take on a reboot any time soon, as the actor is busy with other projects. This includes the film Asteroid City from Wes Anderson, and mini-series A Small Light. It is also worth noting that David Hollander, who served as showrunner on Ray Donovan for all seven seasons and as executive producer for the movie, may not be involved in any future revival due to his recent firing from American Gigolo after allegations of misconduct.

While talks of a Ray Donovan reboot might seem a bit premature considering the movie was released in January, Schreiber’s openness is a good sign. In an age of prequels, spinoffs and remakes, a Ray Donovan reboot would most certainly be welcome. Fans of the show are passionate, which largely influenced Showtime’s decision to produce a feature length film to wrap up the story after its cancellation. What’s more, with Schreiber open to reprising the titular role, other Ray Donovan cast members may also return, though a reboot could provide an opportunity to introduce new characters and take Donovan’s story in a different direction. If a reboot is on the cards, it’s likely still a way off, but Schreiber’s comments indicate that there may be hope for Ray Donovan yet.
