Stranger Things' Vecna Responds To Starbucks Meme

Warning: spoilers ahead for Stranger Things season 4

The actor behind Stranger Things antagonist Vecna finally shares his reaction to the viral meme showing him in costume drinking Starbucks. In the final episodes of Netflix’s wildly popular sci-fi adventure series, Vecna meets his supposed end at the hands of Nancy, Robin, and Steve during a combined effort by the Hawkins heroes to once again save the world. Before that, Eleven pieces together his covert influence behind nearly every significant event in Stranger Things, including Will’s disappearance, revealing him as the series’ ultimate antagonist.

Fans who watched season 4, volume 1, know that Vecna is Henry Creel, a.k.a. Hawkins Lab test subject 001, an orderly who took care of Eleven. When he finally rebelled against Brenner and killed the other enhanced children, Eleven used her powers to unknowingly banish him to the Upside Down, where he encountered the power of the Mind Flayer. Vecna’s monstrous form is a prosthetic suit donned by actor Jamie Campbell Bower, who became a meme after a BTS video of Vecna drinking Starbucks appeared on the official Stranger Things Twitter page.

In an exclusive interview with Screen Rant, Bower addresses the viral meme and his thoughts about Vecna’s sudden popularity outside of the Upside Down. When asked if he’s seen the meme and his reaction to it, Bower admits he has, but says he isn’t sure what he thinks. Check out the full quote below:

Yes, I’ve seen it. [Laughs] I don’t know. I was never sure; I was unsure. No, people have said that it humanizes me, so I’ll take that.

Although Bower isn’t sure what to think about the meme, his laughter implies that he at least finds the phenomenon humorous. After seeing Vecna terrorize the season 4 protagonists rooted in Hawkins, fans likely found the dissonance between the horror and the laid-back Bower fitting into Vecna’s on-set practical suit funny, and the meme is innocent enough to amuse him. The point about humanizing Vecna is surprisingly poignant, since the antagonist’s backstory explores his dehumanization under Dr. Brenner and his associates. They treated One as nothing more than a powerful tool for their purposes.

Vecna’s menacing aesthetic and actions toward the Stranger Things cast already made him a fan-favorite within the show’s universe, but the meme-worthy BTS clip made him relatable. Bower may be more or less indifferent about the craze, but he appears to understand the importance of the meme’s popularity. Not only does it get more viewers interested in watching Stranger Things, but it further elevates Vecna as a complex antagonist. Fans can look beyond Eleven’s battle with Vecna and see him as the traumatized boy who was pushed too far, possibly even understanding his murderous intentions. This realization makes his status as the big bad and his influence on the story more compelling – but doesn’t make the Starbucks meme any less funny.
