Endgame Directors Address Possibility Of Helming An MCU X-Men Reboot

As the superhero team gear up to make their franchise debuts, Avengers: Endgame directors Joe and Anthony Russo are open to ushering the X-Men into the Marvel Cinematic Universe with a movie reboot. 20th Century Fox first brought the Marvel team to life with the 2000 eponymous film, which scored critical acclaim and was a box office hit, grossing over $296 million against its $75 million production budget. This film’s success not only helped with the reemergence of the superhero movie genre along the likes of Wesley Snipes’ Blade trilogy and Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy, but also a full franchise of sequels, prequels and spinoffs.

After 11 films in the franchise, the X-Men‘s big-screen future was put into limbo with Disney acquiring 21st Century Fox and the rights to the Marvel characters for Marvel Studios. Two final installments would be released with Dark Phoenix and The New Mutants, both of which scored largely negative reviews from critics and audiences alike and were box office failures, resulting in the proper closure of the franchise as Marvel head Kevin Feige announced plans at 2019’s San Diego Comic-Con for a mutant-centered film set in the MCU that would be different from Fox’s. While the studio’s plans for the characters still remains largely unknown, one creative team are eager to help introduce the MCU to the X-Men.

While speaking with AP EntertainmentAvengers: Endgame directors Joe and Anthony Russo opened up about their potential MCU return. When asked about the possibility of helming the MCU’s X-Men reboot, Joe enthusiastically expressed his interest in bringing the superhero team to the fold, discussing his own interest in the X-Men. See what Joe Russo said below:

“One of my prized possessions is Incredible Hulk No. 181, which is the first appearance of Wolverine. It’s an important part of my comic book collection. Wolverine being so essential to the X-Men, of course, that would be a fun project to work on and find a new way into it. But, I do think that that’s probably something that [Marvel Studios President and Marvel Entertainment Chief Creative Officer Kevin Feige] has rightfully put aside for a while to introduce some new characters to the world, and bring that back when it’s ready.”

With the Russos showing their strengths in balancing large rosters of characters with Captain America: Civil War and both Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame, many are sure to find the concept of the directing duo helming the MCU’s X-Men reboot to be promising. Additionally, given Joe Russo expressing his love for the character of Wolverine and understanding how essential he is to the superhero team is sure to be a welcome sign of the filmmaker understanding the source material. With the Russos having also confirmed their interest in returning to the MCU at some point in the future, the door is open for the Avengers: Endgame directors to reunite with Marvel Studios to bring the team to the screen.

Though Marvel has remained largely quiet on any proper development of the MCU X-Men reboot, recent installments in the series have offered glimpses of the studio’s plans for the team. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness memorably saw Patrick Stewart play a version of his Professor Charles Xavier as a member of the Illuminati, while Ryan Reynolds is currently developing Deadpool 3 in the MCU with the hopes of convincing Hugh Jackman to return as Wolverine while Taron Egerton’s recent meeting with Marvel has left many speculating the Kingsman star is taking over the iconic role. While audiences await proper word on the X-Men’s MCU future, they can revisit the Fox franchise streaming on Disney+ now.
