Dune 2 Starts Filming Much Sooner Than Expected

Despite a recent release date shift, Dune: Part Two will start filming sooner than previously expected. Denis Villeneuve is returning to helm the second half of Frank Herbert’s sci-fi epic novel, for which he earned two Oscar nominations for Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay, though would lose both to the coming-of-age dramedy CODA. Villeneuve will also be co-writing the script for the sequel with previous Dune collaborators Jon Spaihts and Eric Roth.

Dune: Part Two is expected to pick up the story from where the first film left off, where Timothée Chalamet’s Paul Atreides and Rebecca Ferguson’s Lady Jessica have joined up with the Fremen in the wake of House Harkonnen’s devastating attack on the family. The sequel is expected to see the returns of Zendaya as Chani, who Villeneuve has promised will get a larger role than the first Dune, Josh Brolin as Gurney, Javier Bardem as Stilgar, Stellan Skarsgård as The Baron and Dave Bautista as Rabban. With the first Dune proving to be both a box office and HBO Max hit, Warner Bros. greenlit Dune: Part Two just days after the first film’s release and as Villeneuve had already begun planning the sequel long beforehand, it looks like the movie is kicking off sooner than expected.

Deadline has brought word that filming on Dune: Part Two is set to begin much sooner than expected. Despite previous reports that Denis Villeneuve’s sequel would kick off production in fall, sources now report that shooting will properly begin with the full cast on July 21 in Budapest, Hungary, where the original film was shot. Sources also report that pre-shooting is about to get underway on Dune: Part Two in Italy for two days beginning this week.

Confirmation of the sequel’s filming start comes just days after Warner Bros. announced that it would be pushing Dune: Part Two‘s release date back by a month, pitting it against the Hunger Games prequel, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. Given Villeneuve’s sequel was originally slated to begin production this fall, it will be interesting to see if Dune: Part Two retains its November 2023 release or if the earlier start date will see WB elect to bump it to closer to the October date the first film was released on. Given October 2023 is largely devoid of any major tentpole competition for Dune: Part Two, save for Blumhouse’s Exorcist reboot and Paramount’s A Quiet Place spinoff from Pig writer/director Michael Sarnoski, shifting the sci-fi epic up to its original October release could ultimately work in its favor.

Anticipation has been high for Dune: Part Two since the first film’s cliffhanger ending saw Paul finally take to showing his fighting skills that will be vital to taking revenge on the House Harkonnen for his father’s death. Excitement has only grown with every new cast member added to the roster, ranging from Elvis star Austin Butler to Black Widow‘s Florence Pugh and No Time to Die‘s Léa Seydoux. With Dune: Part Two set to begin filming this month, audiences should look forward to teases from the set of the sci-fi sequel in the near future.
