Duffer Brothers Explain Why Stranger Things Season 5 Will Be Shorter

Creators Matt and Ross Duffer explain why Stranger Things season 5 will be shorter than season 4. First released in 2016, Stranger Things quickly became a massive hit for Netflix, introducing audiences to the superpowered Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) and her group of friends as they attempt to protect their hometown from interdimensional monsters. The show’s fourth season, of which the last two episodes were released this past Friday, was the biggest season yet, seeing the core group of heroes face off against the evil Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower).

Not long before Stranger Things season 4 was released, it was widely reported that the season would be longer than previous installments by a considerable margin. Seasons 1 through 3 consist of eight episodes each, with each episode usually running under an hour long. Season 4, on the other hand, consists of nine episodes but boasts a total runtime of close to 13 hours due to several supersized episodes. In addition to a longer overall runtime, Stranger Things season 4 also features a bigger cast than any previous season, including Finn Wolfhard, David Harbour, Winona Ryder, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, Natalia Dyer, Charlie Heaton, Joe Keery, Noah Schnapp, Sadie Sink, and Maya Hawke, among others.

In a new interview with Collider, the Duffer Brothers reveal that Stranger Things season 5 will stick to a more traditional episode count and runtime. The creators explain that part of the reason why season 4 ran so long was because there were close to two hours of setup before most of the main characters even knew about Vecna and what he was doing in Hawkins. With all that setup out of the way, the Duffers expect to be able to get into the action of Stranger Things season 5 much quicker. Check out their full comments below:

Matt Duffer: “We thought Season 4 was going to be eight [episodes], and they were going to be regular length. So if you had interviewed us before four, that’s what I would’ve said. I think we’re aiming for eight again. We don’t want it to be 13 hours. We’re aiming for more like 10 hours or something. I think it’s going to be longer than Season 1 because we just have so much to wrap up, but I don’t think it’s going to be as long as Season 4.”

Ross Duffer: “This season, for instance, it was two hours before our characters even realized the monster was killing people in Hawkins. They know what the threat is now, and so that will help speed it up.”

While little is known about Stranger Things season 5 other than the fact that it will feature a time-jump to account for the aging of the main actors, it’s clear that the Duffers aren’t looking to create a final season as supersized as season 4. With season 4’s cliffhanger ending and the threat facing Hawkins now being fairly evident, it seems like the Duffers will be able to do away with much of the preliminary mystery and setup, thus making each episode in season 5 more focused. Interestingly, however, the Duffers also say that they expected season 4 to be much shorter in length, potentially meaning that season 5 could end up running longer than anticipated.

Much of Stranger Things season 4 was spent bouncing around between different groups of characters. With Hopper in a Soviet prison, Eleven in California, Mike in Hawkins, and a handful of other characters in various places in between, season 4, even with its elongated runtime, struggled to give adequate time to each separate group of characters. With many of the main characters now united again in Hawkins, Stranger Things season 5’s story will potentially be less spread out, which could also help the Duffers keep the runtimes a bit shorter.
