Disney+ Makes Mysterious Jessica Jones Change 4 Months After Debut

Almost four months after its debut on Disney+, the streaming service has made a very mysterious change to the Marvel series Jessica Jones. Before Marvel Studios began making their shows through Disney+, there was the original Marvel TV era. Marvel TV was its own division within Marvel Entertainment that was the home of shows like Agents of SHIELD, Runaways, Cloak & Dagger, and Netflix’s The Defenders franchise. When Kevin Feige became Marvel Entertainment’s CCO, Marvel TV was absorbed into his responsibilities as the remaining shows got canceled or came to their natural end.

One of the Marvel shows on Netflix was Jessica Jones, starring Krysten Ritter as the titular heroine. The series followed Jessica’s life after having gone through massive trauma and abuse at the hand of Kilgrave, as she becomes a P.I. while also being one of New York’s street heroes. Jessica Jones was one of the Netflix shows to lead into The Defenders, uniting Ritter’s character with Daredevil, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist. While the shows ended sooner than expected, 2022 served as the year they finally left Netflix as their licensing deal ended.

Earlier this year, Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, The Defenders, and The Punisher moved to Disney+. Since then, there have been a few technical changes made to some of them. Jessica Jones is now the latest former-Netflix series to get a little retooling by the Disney-branded streaming service. While Disney+ or Marvel Studios haven’t explained why, “A.K.A. Ladies Night,” the pilot episode of Jessica Jones, got a change to its title card that now has it listed as A.K.A. Jessica Jones. So far, it appears only to have been for the Jessica Jones series premiere and no other episodes in the three available seasons of the Defender-led series.

The title A.K.A. Jessica Jones is a fun callout to a different version of the TV show. Initially, Jessica was going to have a series on ABC before Agents of SHIELD. Melissa Rosenberg was originally working with ABC to adapt Jessica into the MCU, with the show slated to be called A.K.A. Jessica Jones. Even though Luke made his MCU debut through her Netflix show, he was also part of the ABC project when it was first developed. A.K.A. Jessica Jones would have seen Jessica working with Carol Danvers, who joined the MCU as Captain Marvel instead.

While it’s unclear why it never moved forward on ABC, it only took a few years until the project got retooled as a Netflix series. Nevertheless, the bigger mystery is why Disney+ did this only to the Jessica Jones pilot. Perhaps the plan is to have every episode get the A.K.A. Jessica Jones title card, but that remains to be seen. Given that every episode had “A.K.A.” in front of it, this might be Disney+’s way of trying to have the title card match each episode title, but that’s a theory for the time being. Jessica Jones seasons 1-3 are streaming exclusively on Disney+
