Umbrella Academy Star Teases Klaus’ Season 4 Storyline Without Powers

The Umbrella Academy star, Robert Sheehan, opened up about what Klaus’ season 4 storyline may look like without his powers. The Umbrella Academy season 3 premiered on Netflix on June 22, 2022 and follows the Hargreeves siblings after their doings in the 1960s vastly changed the present timeline. Not only did Sir Reginald Hargreeves (Colm Feore) form the Sparrow Academy instead of the Umbrella Academy, but the original 6 Hargreeves don’t even exist in this timeline. Hence, their jump from the 1960s into a timeline they don’t exist in created a grandfather paradox that triggered a kugelblitz.

The kugelblitz, or black hole, is uncontrollable and grows in strength throughout the series, sucking up animals, people, and later whole cities into it. In the end, the Hargreeves follow a highly suspicious plan formulated by Sir Reginald and they do manage to save the world. However, the saving of the world did have consequences and the season ends with the Hargreeves discovering they have lost their powers in an altered universe. The Hargreeves end up splitting up and it remains to be seen how each of them fares without their powers.

In an interview with CinemaBlend, Sheehan opened up about what The Umbrella Academy season 4 may hold for Klaus without his powers. Sheehan expressed excitement at the exploration of the characters without their powers, which he calls their “super flaws.” Surprisingly, he actually hopes that Klaus is a complete and total mess without his powers and isn’t capable of being a normal person. This way, he can ensure Klaus’ storyline will be entertaining for a fourth season. Check out his statement below:

Oh, I suppose I was always secretly looking forward to a possible time when the Umbrella team were stripped of their powers, you know, stripped of their super flaws. So I was very pleased. It’s the ideal sort of fish-out-of-water plot, isn’t it? When you set up these adults who, since the age of almost dotage, they’ve been made to be superheroes and do all that business and be very capable and do that stuff. So the most interesting theatrical idea is to sort of subvert that notion, and so stripped them of all that, and see what they are without it. I really hope that without it, Klaus is an absolute gibbering mess. That’s what I’d like to see. Just completely incapable of being a normal person. That’s really all I want. That will keep me very entertained for another season’s worth of this show. And after that, who knows? Who knows what the bells and whistles will look like on that?

That Sheehan thinks Klaus would be a mess without his powers is pretty interesting. Throughout the seasons, Klaus hated his powers so much that he engaged in substance abuse to keep them at bay. This was the result a traumatic childhood in which his father frequently locked him a room with spirits to hone his powers. However, season 3 finally saw Klaus embracing his powers for the first time. He strikes up a strange bond with the Reginald of the new timeline, and works with him to manage his powers. Throughout the season, Klaus discovers he can come back from the dead and is immortal. He also visits a cemetery where he finally confronts his fear of spirits. While Allison (Emmy Raver-Lampman) also debuted altered powers, the discovery of Klaus’ new abilities and the sheer increase in his powers is unlike anything else demonstrated by the Hargreeves.

Considering that Klaus just learned to embrace his powers and discovered his immortality, it makes sense that the loss of them would significantly impact him. Allison, Luther (Tom Hopper), and Diego (David Castañeda), all have significant others to turn to and may actually fare much better without their powers. However, for Ben (Justin H. Min), Viktor (Elliot Page), Five (Aidan Gallagher), and Klaus, they really don’t have much besides their powers. The course of their entire lives has always centered on their powers and all them had their lives badly disrupted because of them. As Sheehan stated, there is a good possibility of them feeling incapable of being normal without their powers. Hopefully, a season 4 renewal is in order for The Umbrella Academy that will allow the series to explore the Hargreeves’ lives without powers.
