Andor's Timeline Is Already Breaking A Star Wars Record

Newly released details for the upcoming Disney+ Star Wars spin-off Andor reveal that the show’s timeline is already breaking a Star Wars record. Andor will follow Rogue One: A Star Wars Story‘s break-out character Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) during his time in the Rebellion before the events of Rogue One. The show will span a total of five years, starting from 5BBY, across two seasons.

According to Andor showrunner Tony Gilroy, the series will have an interesting structure, especially in regards to season 2. While season 1 of Andor will cover one year of Cassian’s journey within the ranks of the Rebellion, season 2 will cover a total of four years, split evenly into blocks of three episodes each. Each block of episodes will be helmed by a different director and is likely to explore a different adventure or mission from that specific year. This means that each three-episode block may be treated narratively like a movie, which is certainly a departure from other Star Wars shows so far, but not an unwelcome one.

With this unconventional structure, Andor is breaking a Star Wars record. It is the only live-action Star Wars show (so far) to cover such an extensive chunk of the Star Wars timeline. Other shows, like The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, and more recently, Obi-Wan Kenobi, have told more intimate stories on a much smaller timescale. And even the Star Wars movies, though they boast large gaps of time between installments, tell stories that take place over a few days, perhaps weeks – months may be at a stretch. Andor‘s story will cover a portion of the Star Wars timeline that has only really been explored by Disney once before, in a very different medium. If Andor‘s timeline can be compared to any Star Wars media, it’s the animated shows.

Both The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels cover extended periods of the Star Wars timeline. However, even The Clone Wars‘ timeline cannot match up to Andor‘s, as it only covers three years, from 22BBY-19BBY. Star Wars Rebels, on the other hand, follows the exploits of The Ghost Crew rebels from 5BBy up to and including 0BBY. This, interestingly enough, is the exact same timeline that Andor will follow. Both shows explore the founding of the Rebellion, and its efforts as a fledgling movement to help people in need across the galaxy.

Given this shared timeline, there is a strong possibility that the events of Andor and Star Wars Rebels overlap. Considering other Disney+ live-action Star Wars shows have developed narrative threads from Star Wars Rebels, most notably with the upcoming Ahsoka show, but The Mandalorian as well, this wouldn’t be too big of a stretch. Star Wars‘ expansion on Disney+ is all part of an effort to create a more interconnected universe. Introducing Star Wars Rebels characters in live-action for the first time in a show like Andor would help take that effort a step further.

Andor‘s extensive timeline provides exciting possibilities for its narrative. There could be numerous new planets to discover, old friends to become reacquainted with, and new characters to become attached to. Andor will be the biggest live-action Star Wars show yet, not just in terms of its timeline but in the number of episodes per season as well, hopefully heralding an age of more extensive exploration of the total Star Wars timeline.
