1 Detail In Godzilla vs. Kong Teased A Much Bigger Ancient Titan War

One detail in Godzilla vs. Kong hinted at a much bigger ancient Titan War than what was discussed in the movie. It was confirmed early on that Godzilla’s species and the Kongs have been involved in a war that dates back thousands – if not millions – of years. At some point in the MonsterVerse’s history, the ancestors of the two titular Titans engaged in an epic clash in the hidden Hollow Earth world.

Since there’s obviously a limit on how much the human characters could know about the fighting that took place all those years ago, very little was said about the Titan War in Godzilla vs. Kong. However, such a battle has been hinted at since Kong: Skull Island when a post-credits scene revealed a painting of the two monsters fighting. It was made clear then that the two have a long and rich history in the MonsterVerse timeline. Titan skeletons and the presence of axes made from Godzilla’s dorsal fins in the Hollow Earth temple provided a glimpse at the carnage that transpired when the two sides collided in the distant past. It helped paint a picture of an army of Kongs coming together to battle a horde of Godzillas in the Hollow Earth.

Interestingly, the Godzilla vs. Kong opening credits included a shot that pointed toward the possibility of the Titan War being on an even larger scale than the movie suggested. A painting depicting a battle between Godzilla and Kong seemingly included Mothra and a Skullcrawler. Their inclusion in the mural is indicative of both taking part in the conflict. If that’s true, then the Titan War was so much more than a feud between the ancestors of just two Titan species. Instead, it seems it encompassed multiple different Titans, presumably with each participating monster choosing one of the two sides.

Based on the evidence, it’s possible that the Titan War encompassed a long list of MonsterVerse Titans that go far beyond Godzilla and Kong. They may have been the biggest figures in the Titan War and the leaders of the two sides, but there may have been several other pieces in play as well. As for where they all fit, Mothra and the Skullcrawlers were likely in Godzilla’s corner. That makes sense, considering Mothra’s symbiotic relationship with Godzilla and Skrullcrawlers’ rivalry with Kong. Rodan, Godzilla: King of the Monsters’ original Titans, and several unrevealed MonsterVerse Titans may also have fought in the Titan War.

A massive and diverse gathering of Titans fighting it out in the MonsterVerse’s ancient history is an interesting concept, and one that was only hinted at in Godzilla vs. Kong. Despite the vast number of Titans that exist in the MonsterVerse, the movie limited its scope to focus on Godzilla and Kong and neglected the rest, which explains why this element of the Titan War wasn’t a focal point of Godzilla vs. Kong’s MonsterVerse history lesson. However, with both Titans expected to return for Godzilla vs Kong 2, there’s a good chance that the MonsterVerse will get an opportunity to go much further with this tease in the future.
