Loki Season 2's First Easter Egg Proves Frog Thor Was Nothing

With its first teaser image referencing the obscure Marvel villain Zaniac, Loki season 2 promises to be even weirder than Loki season 1. Released in June 2021, Loki season 1 followed the activities of the alternate version, or variant, of Loki who escaped in Avengers: Endgame. His survival got him in trouble with the Time Variance Authority (TVA), but they ultimately tasked him with helping capture another dangerous Loki variant. Widely popular, the Loki season 1 finale confirmed that there would be a Loki season 2 during its mid-credits scene.

While almost no plot details have been released about Loki season 2 so far, it will most likely focus on variants and the multiverse like season 1 did. Loki introduced the concept of the multiverse in the MCU, which has been expanded in more recent movies like Spider-Man: No Way Home and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Due to the inclusion of the multiverse, Loki can include more odd characters and references to Marvel comics. For example, Loki season 1, episode 5, “Journey Into Mystery” centered on Loki meeting variants of himself at the End of Time, where the TVA sent variants to die. “Journey Into Mystery” also featured a quick Easter egg of Frog Thor, a variant of Thor sometimes called “Throg” from Marvel comics. Trapped inside a glass jar underground, Frog Thor desperately tried to escape to reach his buried hammer.

However, Loki season 2’s first set photo may have just proved that obscure references, like Frog Thor, will become common in Loki. The teaser image showed a movie poster for the in-universe slasher film Zaniac, starring fictional actor Brad Wolfe. Although the poster could just be a background Easter egg, it could also signal that the minor Marvel villain Zaniac will play a major role in Loki season 2. Based on this image, Frog Thor may have only been the beginning of Loki season 2’s strange Marvel Easter eggs.

Who Is Zaniac In Marvel Comics?

A lesser-known Marvel villain, Zaniac was an entity that would possess hosts, such as Jack the Ripper, and force them to kill beautiful women. More recently, Brad Wolfe was an actor, cast as the titular serial killer in a horror movie about Zaniac. Unfortunately, an accident on set led to Wolfe getting mutated and possessed by Zaniac. Using his new super strength and ability to summon energy knives, Wolfe as Zaniac went on a rampage until Thor stopped him and prevented the Zaniac vermin from infecting a new host. Although it is unknown if Zaniac might be a cameo or a major character, the Disney+ series could change Zaniac’s story to involve Loki defeating him instead of Thor.

Why Loki Season 2 Will Be Even Weirder Than Season 1

Given how much material the MCU can pull from, it may seem odd that Loki season 2 would feature such an obscure Marvel villain. However, with the multiverse becoming an increasingly common element in the MCU, Marvel movies and television shows can use weirder characters and events from the comics and still make them seem normal. With its chaotic tone, Loki provides the perfect opportunity for Marvel to push the boundaries and include the types of strange references that audiences have grown accustomed to. In this way, Frog Thor may have seemed random during Loki season 1, but Zaniac foreshadows that there may be even more odd Easter eggs to come in Loki season 2.
