Love & Thunder Gives Thor Movies MCU's Worst Rotten Tomatoes Average
Thor: Love and Thunder's low Rotten Tomatoes score officially gives Thor's solo movies the lowest average Rotten Tomatoes score in the MCU.

Love & Thunder Gives Thor Movies MCU's Worst Rotten Tomatoes Average

Thanks to Thor: Love and Thunder, Thor’s solo movies now have a lower average Rotten Tomatoes score than the solo movies for any other MCU character. As the only member of the MCU’s original Avengers lineup to get a fourth solo movie, Chris Hemsworth’s Thor is now tied with Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man when it comes to MCU appearances (excluding cameos and post-credits scenes), but the character hasn’t been nearly as well-received as RDJ’s Tony Stark, particularly when it comes to Rotten Tomatoes.

While the Mightiest Avenger has gotten four total solo movies, that doesn’t mean Marvel Studios figured out the perfect formula. Every Thor movie has an overall positive reception, but drastic swings in tone, characterization, and supporting cast throughout each installment have prevented the character from carving out his own clear place in the larger MCU story like other Phase 1 heroes such as Captain America and Iron Man.

Now, thanks to Thor: Love and Thunder‘s 69 percent Rotten Tomatoes score (the fourth worst score in the MCU), Thor solo movies have an average score of 76 percent, which is lower than the average score for any other character. While The Incredible Hulk’s 67 percent score and The Eternals‘ 47 percent score are both lower, with only one installment for each, neither subfranchise compares to Thor’s average across four installments, featuring movies in every Phase in the MCU. The first Thor scored a 77 percent, Thor: The Dark World scored 66 percent, Thor: Ragnarok is the highest scoring Thor movie with 93 percent, and now Thor: Love and Thunder‘s 69 percent Rotten Tomatoes score hovers just a few points above The Dark World.

Comparatively, the overall Rotten Tomatoes average for the MCU is 83 percent and the average scores for other MCU solo movies include (from best to worst) Spider-Man with 92 percent, Guardians of the Galaxy with 89 percent, Captain America with 87 percent, The Avengers with 87 percent, Ant-Man with 85 percent, Iron Man with 82 percent, and Doctor Strange with 82 percent. While every single Thor solo movie has a Fresh Rotten Tomatoes score, the reviews aren’t nearly as positive as the standard established by the MCU’s Rotten Tomatoes track record.

It’s not just Rotten Tomatoes critics giving Thor a low score, either. Thor: Love and Thunder‘s 78 percent audience score gives Thor a 79 percent average, which is tied for the worst average Rotten Tomatoes audience score in the MCU for any hero with more than one solo movie. Of course, reviews are subjective, and with a 76 percent average score from Rotten Tomatoes critics, more than three-quarters of reviewers enjoyed the movie, but taken in the context of the MCU’s Rotten Tomatoes track record, Marvel Studios just hasn’t been able to get Thor the same kind of love as its other Avengers characters.
