Is Thor: Love & Thunder Set Before Or After Guardians Of The Galaxy 3?

Warning! SPOILERS for Thor: Love and Thunder.

The Guardians of the Galaxy feature in the Thor: Love and Thunder opening scenes, but does the fourth Thor movie take place before, or after the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3? Thor’s (Chris Hemsworth) partnership with Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) and the Guardians was one of the surprise highlights of both Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. Thor’s rivalry with Quill and his gleefully violent warrior partnership with Rocket and Groot lent some much-needed lightness to the apocalyptic gloom of the Avengers’ battle against Thanos.

At the end of Avengers: Endgame, Thor decided to leave New Asgard behind to find himself by traveling the galaxy with the Guardians. Love and Thunder opens with Thor bailing the others out of a battle to protect a religious temple from invading forces, before they part ways to deal with Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale). While this may have disappointed, viewers who were hoping the team would feature more, this moment helps set up the MCU timeline.

The brief appearance by the Guardians of the Galaxy in Love and Thunderbut it strongly suggests that the timeline will see Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 set after the events of Thor: Love and Thunder, rather than before. That said, it’s not unheard of for movies in the MCU to not follow a parallel timeline to their release dates. 2021’s Black Widow was a flashback movie that took place prior to her death in Endgame, while 2018s Ant-Man and the Wasp and 2019’s Captain Marvel were released between Infinity War and Endgame, but their stories took place prior to Thanos’ snap. So it is possible that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 could feature Thor in its line-up – however, there are a couple of reasons why that would be a bad idea.

Why It’s Good Thor Won’t Be In Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol 3

The most obvious issue with Thor appearing in Guardians of the Galaxy 3 is that it’s a Guardians movie, not a Thor movie. The joke that opens Love and Thunder is that, when backed into a corner, the Guardians need to request Thor’s help to finish off their enemies. It’s a fun moment that sets the tone of Taika Waititi’s second Thor movie, but it wouldn’t really sustain a third Guardians movie. More importantly, if Guardians 3 is set before Thor: Love and Thunder, it provides a disappointing answer to what will be one of the core mysteries of James Gunn’s sequel. At the end of Avengers: Endgame, an alternate Gamora (Zoe Saldana) has been returned to life in the MCU via time travel but has parted company with the Guardians and her former/future lover Peter Quill, her whereabouts unknown. As Gamora doesn’t feature in Thor: Love and Thunder, a Guardians 3 set before Love and Thunder wouldn’t solve this Gamora mystery.

Just as setting Guardians 3 prior to Love and Thunder would undermine Peter Quill’s search for Gamora, it would also devalue Thor’s Love and Thunder character growth. At the beginning of Love and Thunder, he’s still dodging his responsibilities as an Asgardian and trying to figure out his place in the universe. By the end of the movie, Thor has reconciled with Jane before her death, saved the future generation of Asgardians from Gorr, and is now caring for the God Butcher’s daughter, Love. That character arc, combined with the set-up for Thor 5, would mean that his involvement in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 would be a retrograde step that would put the character right back to where he was post-Endgame. As fun as it might be to see Thor and the Guardians face off against Will Poulter’s Adam Warlock, it would undermine the good work that Thor: Love and Thunder does to give the character meaning and purpose once more.
