Jon Snow’s Immortality Theory Makes Game Of Thrones’ Spinoff Better

Timeline concerns about Jon Snow’s spinoff can be fixed by a Game of Thrones theory about his immortality. HBO is now developing a Game of Thrones sequel series about Jon Snow, with Kit Harington reprising his role as the former King in the North. Jon Snow’s series is the first spinoff of the franchise to take place after the timeline of Game of Thrones’ ending, with the rest of HBO’s spinoffs like House of the Dragon being prequels set long beforehand.

Game of Thrones’ 2019 series finale was famously polarizing, with the character resolutions being highly debated among audiences. One such argument centered on the ending for Jon Snow, who was confirmed to be the trueborn son of Rhaegar Targaryen and Lyanna Stark shortly before season 8. While Jon became the true heir to the Iron Throne, he chose to not take up his claim, maintaining that (his aunt) Daenerys Targaryen was the rightful queen. However, when taking King’s Landing from Cersei Lannister, Daenerys used her dragon to slaughter the entire city – foes and innocents alike. Tyrion then convinced Jon that killing Daenerys would be the best decision for the realm, a complicated suggestion that he finally agreed to in the Game of Thrones finale. After killing Daenerys, Jon was exiled to the Night’s Watch, with the show’s final moments seeing him ride beyond the Wall alongside Tormund and the free folk.

The story for Game of Thrones’ Jon Snow spinoff has yet to be confirmed, but the series does have the benefit of A Song of Ice and Fire author George R.R. Martin’s involvement. With no book sources to guide the story for Jon Snow’s spinoff, the series will largely be relying on the character’s arc set up at the end of Game of Thrones, Martin’s expertise around the universe, and Harington’s considerable knowledge of his iconic character. One of the most significant questions for Jon Snow’s spinoff asks when the series will be set, with one fan theory (via Reddit) suggesting the Game of Thrones sequel series will take place centuries into the future if Jon is truly immortal.

Did Jon Snow’s Resurrection Make Him Immortal?

Upon Jon Snow’s resurrection in Game of Thrones season 6, whether or not the character became immortal was a frequent query. After being stabbed to death by a mutiny in the Night’s Watch, Lord Commander Jon Snow bled out and died at Castle Black. However, when Game of Thrones season 6 returned, Ser Davos Seaworth urged Melisandre to use her magic to revive him. Her attempts were ultimately successful, with Jon Snow gasping for a breath of air as he returned to life.

While Jon Snow returned from the dead, it’s highly unlikely that this process actually made him immortal. Jon is still a mortal man, but was brought back through the magic of the Lord of Light. Similar to how Game of Thrones‘ character Beric Dondarrion was brought back to life six times by Thoros of Myr, Jon Snow can certainly die again, he just now has a way for his deaths to be impermanent. Beric eventually died for good in the Game of Thrones Battle of Winterfell, proving the character’s many resurrections did not make him entirely immortal. The same is apt to be true for Jon Snow, but one Game of Thrones fan theory is convinced that Melisandre’s magic allowed him to defy death or aging.

What Jon Snow’s Game Of Thrones Spinoff Story Could Be

HBO has yet to announce any details for Jon Snow’s spinoff, with the story of his sequel also being quite ambiguous after Game of Thrones’ ending. Following the defeat of the Night King and the surviving wildlings’ desire to return back beyond the Wall, Jon Snow’s future outside of Westeros wasn’t given any clear conflicts. However, it’s possible a new Night King or another supernatural threat could arise beyond the Wall, especially if Game of Thrones’ sequel series is set far into the future. On the other hand, Jon could be battling another King Beyond the Wall after previously coming into conflict with Mance Rayder.

There also won’t be as many warring wildling clans in Jon Snow’s spinoff considering a significant portion of them were killed by the White Walkers and wights, so this isn’t apt to be the basis of the sequel’s story. The plot for Jon Snow’s Game of Thrones sequel series could also see him rebuilding the Night’s Watch after its destruction by the Night King, although there is seemingly nothing to keep out of Westeros at this point. Others have suggested that Jon Snow’s story will see him encountering a new conflict with the Children of the Forest, perhaps learning more about the true history of the First Men.

GOT’s Jon Snow Spinoff Is Set Centuries In The Future – Theory Explained

A fan theory from Reddit claims that if Game of Thrones confirms Jon Snow is immortal or immune to aging, the sequel series can be set centuries into the future. The theory suggests that the immortal Jon Snow could traverse Game of Thrones‘ Westeros before a new supernatural threat arrives, with Kit Harington’s character serving as the main character in the first season. However, it also hints that Jon Snow would meet an entirely new cast of characters and become involved in Westeros’ new political strife before dying at the end of season 1. In this manner, Jon Snow’s spinoff would be repeating Ned Stark’s shocking death in Game of Thrones season 1, with the new characters then taking over the battle against the new threat.

Others joining in on the theory suggest that Jon should stay in the North for his spinoff series, but still be immune to aging. While he may not necessarily be immortal, Jon could perhaps be immune to aging in the same manner as Melisandre, as the Red Woman lived for several centuries before dying in Game of Thrones’ ending. In this way, a brand new group of characters can assist Jon in his spinoff series without having to rely on cameos from original Game of Thrones characters. Rather than making Game of Thrones’ sequel a story about Jon and Tormund going on adventures in the North, the show would introduce an entirely new landscape for the land beyond the Wall.

Jon Snow Sequel Timeline Theory Avoids GOT Ending Problems

If the timeline for Jon Snow’s sequel truly takes place centuries into the future as the theory speculates, the spinoff would avoid too much contention with the Game of Thrones ending backlash. Jon Snow’s timeline being far removed from the events of Game of Thrones’ finale would seemingly benefit the series, as it wouldn’t have to directly address King Bran, Sansa as the Queen in the North, Arya Stark’s pirate adventures, or Samwell and Tyrion’s endings. Rather, the Jon Snow sequel would be entirely focused on the central character, with no distractions of the series trying to “fix” any of Game of Thrones’ finale issues. Jon Snow’s spinoff being set immediately after Game of Thrones’ ending inevitably opens it up to controversy in terms of how it addresses the ending, but a story set hundreds of years later wouldn’t be subject to this problem.
