From ‘Bardo’ to ‘The Whale,’ the Fall Awards Season Is Loaded with Potential
It’s been a busy week for Emmy season, as this year’s nominees generated a lot of talk about the shows that made the cut and which ones didn’t. How did “Only Murders in the Building” make a strong show while Selena Gomez’s performance got shut out? Where was “Yellowstone”? And how come Dave Chappelle’s controversial standup special “The Closer” scored two nominations but Jerrod Carmichael’s acclaimed “Rothaniel” didn’t?
This week’s Screen Talk begins with these and other questions before hosts Eric Kohn and Anne Thompson turn to more familiar turf — that is, Oscar season. With the Emmys field now in place, the buzz machine turns to the fall festivals, as several major studios line up their slates. Anticipation is high for the likes of Alejandro Gonzalez Iñarritu’s “Bardo” (above) and Brendan Fraser’s performance in Darren Aronofsky’s “The Whale,” two high-profile titles expected to premiere at Venice. But these are just two of many titles expected to bring a lot of variety to the fall movie season.
This week’s episode also includes discussion of Tom Cruise’s Oscar odds, the recent arrests of several filmmakers in Iran, and Thompson’s thoughts on the Russo brothers’ Netflix action movie “The Gray Man.”
