Ted Lasso Cast React To Brett Goldstein's MCU Casting

Brett Goldstein’s Ted Lasso castmates share their reactions to his debut as Hercules in the newest Marvel Cinematic Universe movie, Thor: Love and Thunder. Goldstein plays fan favorite Roy Kent on Apple+’s Ted Lasso, starring Jason Sudeikis as the titular character who is an American football coach transplanted to England to help a soccer team. Roy Kent is an aging soccer player who was once a favorite of the sport in his youth. Before Goldstein’s casting as Hercules, there had been rumors about the character’s introduction into the MCU and the actors who Marvel Studios would choose to play him. It was not until Thor: Love and Thunder premiered that Marvel gave fans their first glimpse at Goldstein portraying the legendary son of Zeus.

While he is only in the mid-credits scene for a few short seconds, Hercules’ debut teases the future of Thor and the MCU. In the mid-credit scene, Zeus, alive in Omnipotence City despite seemingly being killed by Thor (Chris Hemsworth), assigns his son the task of killing Thor in revenge. Zeus also wants people to be scared of the gods as they once were. Hercules is a rival of Thor in the comics, and it appears his MCU counterpart will have an eventual showdown with the God of Thunder. Brett Goldstein’s casting as Hercules has had a lasting impact on audiences, just as he has as Roy Kent.

Some of Goldstein’s fellow Ted Lasso actors have given their thoughts on his joining the MCU. One such person is Phil Dunster, who plays Roy Ken’s younger rival, Jamie Tartt. Dunster told The Wrap, “I love it. Anytime I get to see him topless is a win for me.” Hannah Waddingham, who stars as Rebecca Welton, the owner of the soccer team AFC Richmond, spoke to Variety on how Goldstein was questioning whether or not he should take the role of Hercules. Waddingham said:

“He said to me, ‘I’ve been offered this thing… Do you guys think I should do it?’ I went, ‘Are you mental? Are you actually having a little bit of a moment? You’re seriously thinking that you might not play Hercules?’… Then he didn’t tell me he bloody did it! So everyone was like ‘Brett Goldstein! Brett Goldstein!’ And I was like, ‘You cheeky bastard.’”

Goldstein’s MCU role may hint at the future of the MCU, but so far, there have been no concrete developments regarding the next project that will include Hercules. The actor has said he does not know what is in store for his character. Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has said to look for clues as to how Phase 4 of the MCU will culminate. Hercules will likely battle Thor but probably won’t stay an antagonist for long. The character may even appear in the Secret Wars plot Phase 4 seems to be building toward.

Hercules joins Harry Styles’ Eternal Eros and Charlize Theron’s sorceress Clea as several characters briefly introduced in Phase 4 movie post-credit scenes. Marvel now has to juggle bringing this stage of the MCU to a close while also figuring out which future feature films these new characters will appear in next. Their addition to the MCU shows just how far the series has come since Iron Man came out in 2008 and gave hope the MCU will continue for years to come. Marvel may want to go on a hiatus from presenting new characters in mid or end-credit scenes alone, as the surprise can sometimes take away from the film’s enjoyment, as an audience may expect these big reveals constantly. Even if Brett Goldstein is not seen in the MCU for some years after his debut in Thor: Love and Thunder, fans can still see him on their screens as Roy Kent on Ted Lasso.
