Zack Snyder Addresses Godzilla vs Kong Review Bombing Accusations

As new details surface of his tenuous relationship with Warner Bros., Zack Snyder is addressing Godzilla vs. Kong review-bombing accusations. Snyder helped usher the DC Extended Universe into existence, having been at the helm for Man of Steel and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice before infamously being shuffled off during Justice League‘s production amidst creative differences and the loss of his daughter. Though briefly reuniting with WB for the 4-hour alternate cut of the latter film dubbed Zack Snyder’s Justice League, Snyder has mostly cut ties with the studio as he has moved on to working with Netflix for the Army of the Dead and Rebel Moon franchises.

Godzilla vs. Kong served as the ultimate culmination of Legendary’s MonsterVerse franchise, finally bringing the titular titans together after the former got two solo movies and the latter was introduced in 2017’s Kong: Skull Island. Helmed by Adam Wingard, the film proved to be a critical and commercial hit upon its early 2021 release, scoring strong reviews for its visual effects and action sequences and grossing over $470 million against its $330 million break-even point. While already having to face a COVID release and simultaneous HBO Max release, Godzilla vs. Kong also had one other hurdle to overcome in its road to success.

A recent report from Rolling Stone brought new details regarding the fallout between Zack Snyder and Warner Bros. and the toxic Release the Snyder Cut movement. Part of the report revealed that director Adam Wingard reached to Snyder to ask his fans to pull back from review-bombing Godzilla vs. Kong, with the Justice League filmmaker addressing the accusations claiming he was never asked and has no control over the fanbase. See what Snyder said below:

“Furthermore, I do not control my fans. They have their own will and their own opinions; you really give me too much credit.”

Though the Release the Snyder cut movement did see much of the Justice League cast and crew show their support, namely Ben Affleck, Gal Gadot, Jason Momoa and Ray Fisher, the campaign was largely frowned upon by those outside of it for their toxic approach to harassing, threatening and cyberbullying those arguing against the project as well as WB execs. The campaign would ultimately work in their favor as WB greenlit Zack Snyder’s Justice League with an additional $70 million budget for editing and minor additional photography, though subsequent releases from the studio have seen the filmmaker’s ardent fanbase review bombing in the hopes of convincing them to “Restore the SnyderVerse.” While Snyder’s defense against Godzilla vs. Kong review-bombing accusations seems to point towards his having no knowledge of the matter, the filmmaker has been known for frequently fueling his fanbase in the lead up to the release of Zack Snyder’s Justice League.

Where some films may have fallen from the review bombing, Godzilla vs. Kong not only proved to be a success in spite of the negative fan reception, but even outperformed Zack Snyder’s Justice League on HBO Max, initially becoming the platform’s most-watched original title until it was surpassed by 2021’s Mortal Kombat movie reboot. In the year since, Godzilla vs. Kong has remained one of HBO Max’s most-watched titles, scoring a sequel order from Warner Bros. with Adam Wingard returning to direct and reuniting with The Guest star Dan Stevens, scheduled for an early 2024 release, while the studio forges on ahead with their loosely connected DCEU plans and Zack Snyder’s Justice League would rank below Wonder Woman 1984 and The Suicide Squad in viewership numbers. Audiences can revisit both blockbuster titles available to stream on HBO Max now.
