2018’s Tomb Raider made about $275 million at the box office, and a sequel was planned at one point, but whether or not it ever gets made is still up in the air.

Star Alicia Vikander, who plays Lara Croft, said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly that the sequel is in limbo due to Amazon buying out MGM, which owns the theatrical rights to Tomb Raider.

“I have no clue,” the Oscar-winning actress said about Tomb Raider 2. “Now, it’s kind of politics.”

Vikander is set to come back to play Croft once again, with Lovecraft Country’s Misha Green stepping into the director’s chair. Vikander said “Misha and I have been ready” to make the sequel, and now it’s “in somebody else’s hands” as to whether or not the movie will be made.

Asked for more details on the sequel, Vikander said she “can’t really say” a lot about Green’s vision for the sequel. Roar Uthaug (The Wave) directed 2018’s Tomb Raider, which was an origin story that featured Croft searching for her father, who was played by Dominic West.

“I’ve been excited to show the world,” Vikander said of what Green is cooking up for Tomb Raider 2. “I love what she’s done with Lovecraft Country.”

The new reboot came up short in the US, where it made just $58 million, but it pulled in $216.4 million from international markets for a global result of about $275 million. Warner Bros. distribution boss Jeff Goldstein said in 2018 that the movie studio always thought the film would do better internationally, especially in China. “We looked at the property as an international piece driving the business,” he said. “And that’s essentially what happened.”

Filming on Tomb Raider 2 was supposed to start in 2020, but was delayed to 2021 due to the pandemic. Cameras never started rolling, though, and the film remains without a production start-date, if it is made at all.
