Galaxy Quest Star Comments On Possible Revival

Over two decades after the film first hit theaters, Galaxy Quest star Missi Pyle has shared her thoughts on a possible revival. The sci-fi comedy centered on a group of actors starring in the titular fictional cult favorite series as a group of real alien beings who believe Galaxy Quest to have been a documentary ask them to help defeat an evil warlord hunting them down. Dean Parisot sat at the helm of Galaxy Quest with a script from Men in Black II‘s Robert Gordon and David Howard.

Tim Allen led the ensemble cast of Galaxy Quest alongside Sigourney Weaver, Alan Rickman, Tony Shalhoub, Sam Rockwell, Daryl Mitchell, Enrico Colantoni, Missi Pyle, Rainn Wilson and Justin Long. Galaxy Quest hit theaters in late 1999 to critical acclaim, with praise directed towards its performances, humor and successful blend of parody and homage to Star Trek and other similar sci-fi genre outings. Given the film’s modest box office returns, Galaxy Quest has gone on to be considered a cult classic as audiences continue to praise it.

While speaking exclusively with Screen Rant for Teen Titans Go! & DC Super Hero Girls: Mayhem in the Multiverse, Missi Pyle opened up about the long-gestating Galaxy Quest follow-up. The actress revealed she’s been contacted a few times regarding a possible revival and knows of a new script, but believes a series could come to be. See what Pyle shared below:

“I remember when we made the film. It was kind of a sleeper movie, I think. Obviously, there’s that moment when all of a sudden Sigourney Weaver’s top is sort of down a little bit, they didn’t really know what movie they had, it was mainly PG-13 and then they wanted to make it PG, they cut out a bunch of stuff. Then it really wasn’t the kids movie that they were looking to make. And then it became this kind of solid hit and it has such great legs, people just love this movie.

I ran into Dean Parisot a few years after we made it and he’s like, ‘I already told the story we needed to tell.’ And then 10 years later, I heard something maybe was going to happen and then they begin to make a TV show and I’ve been reached out to a few times. Then with Alan Rickman passing, I think the idea of doing it with the same cast is over, but I know that there’s another script out there. I don’t know what’s going to happen, could be a series. I wouldn’t be surprised, and I say why not? It was such a lightning in a bottle, I have to say, with that group of people.”

Various attempts to produce a Galaxy Quest follow-up has languished in development hell since the film first hit theaters, with Tim Allen later confirming in 2014 a script was in the works and both Weaver and Rockwell confirming their interest in returning. Since then, the project has ran into a variety of speed bumps, namely Alan Rickman’s death in early 2016 and a shift to a TV series. Many names have been attached to the potential Galaxy Quest show over the years, including Paul Scheer, while a movie sequel has reportedly continued in quiet development.

The most recent update in the Galaxy Quest revival came this past January when Simon Pegg confirmed he and Georgia Pritchett were in talks to develop a series, though noted it hadn’t gone further than talks at the time. Though her comments on the potential revival may not give much in the way of insight for whether it’ll come to be, Pyle’s note that she has been contacted on multiple occasions for the potential Galaxy Quest follow-up should come as a promising sign for fans of the original film that the studio is open to bringing back stars for the new project. While audiences await further word on the revival, they can revisit the original Galaxy Quest streaming on Paramount+ now.
