For the next Indiana Jones movie, Lucasfilm used an artificial intelligence program to de-age Harrison Ford and make him look many years younger. Ford himself has now commented on this, explaining that the AI program used actual, old footage of him for the new movie.

Appearing on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Ford said, “They have this artificial intelligence program that can go through every foot of film that Lucasfilm owns.” He went on to say (via Variety), “Because I did a bunch of movies for them, they have all this footage, including film that wasn’t printed. So they can mine it from where the light is coming from, from the expression.”

After mining the archives to find the right footage, the VFX team applies tracking markers to Ford’s face and he said the lines. “It’s fantastic,” Ford said.

Ford himself doesn’t know how this all works, but he said Indian Jones fans will see the actor’s “actual face” in The Dial of Destiny.

The Dial of Destiny is directed by James Mangold (Logan, Walk the Line), who stepped up after Steven Spielberg–who directed all the previous Indiana Jones films–dropped out. The opening takes place in 1944, which is why Ford is getting de-aged for the movie.

The Dial of Destiny releases on June 30, 2023. In addition to Ford, the movie stars Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Mads Mikkelsen, Boyd Holbrook, John Rhys-Davies, and Antonio Banderas.
