Extra screen time, in-game purchases, and chocolate or sweets, are the top “currencies” now used to reward kids for doing chores – in place of traditional pocket money.

More than four in five parents (84%) are now using alternative “payments” to encourage their children to help around the house, according to a poll of 500 mums and dads, of 12-16-year-olds.

These new reward schemes include being allowed friends round, a later bedtime – and additional mobile data for their phones.

And over half (56%) choose to give other treats like this as a way of stopping their kids from spending their money all in one go – while 44% prefer different methods as it is cheaper.

The research, commissioned by Sky Mobile, also found that while some are still giving money for chores (23%), more than a third of those (36%) would consider switching to something else as a savvy alternative.
