Pep Guardiola says he won’t do a Jurgen Klopp as he ‘has everything he could dream of’

Pep Guardiola insists he won't walk away from English football at the end of the season like rival Jurgen Klopp has decided to do.

Klopp stunned the game last week when revealing he had run out of steam – and would be stepping down as Liverpool boss. But Guardiola has no intention of doing the same thing at Manchester City – and admits he still has the energy to keep winning trophies.

Guardiola, who landed the Treble last season, still has 18 months of his Etihad contract to run. And he could even decide to sign a new deal before the end of 2024.

The Spanish manager said: "I have everything that a manager could dream of. The hierarchy support me and always have. It's a good environment.‌

"I still I feel good. Of course, one day it is going to finish, but I don't think about that right now. Winning helps you to have more energy, while when you are losing games you are more tired. I see the team getting better – and seeing how the team behaved made me feel, 'wow, we are still together, we are on the same path'.

"That gives you energy. Energy, you do not switch it on or off. You have to bring energy every day, with what you live in your personal life and many things."

Guardiola reckons he has become a more intelligent manager with experience – and has learned to become less obsessed with football. The Spaniard, whose side host Burnley tomorrow night (Wednesday), said: "When I started in Barcelona, I was like that.

"But now I can stay on the sofa watching TV and don't think about football. That helps me, because then I have more desire to reconnect.

"Before, I was all the time thinking, because I thought I was missing something or not being professional enough. I understand that was a mistake, and it's better to have the quality for what you want to do.

"Sometimes I rely on my people to help me see these kind of things – and make me feel more comfortable to arrive in a training session, or in front of the players, completely fresh. Then you know exactly what you have to do.

"For many, many years you have to know yourself better and adjust. In those terms I learned. Before, it was 24 hours – and now I don't need 24 hours to prepare for the games, because I arrive better at the right moment to be in front of the players."

The former Barcelona and Bayern Munich boss admits he will know when the time is right to either sign a new deal or leave the English champions. Guardiola, who took charge of City in 2016, added: "I think we have time. When you have a year-and-a-half left on your contract, it is a lot, a lot of time.

"Normally the decision is quick. I trust my feelings and instincts. My family is involved. When I feel it is OK, I feel good, they want me, then OK.

"Extending after two years is not the same as extending after nine. It’s completely different. Still, I am sitting here ,and I am ok."
