It may be his last grand prix weekend but the competitive juices are still coursing through Sebastian Vettel as he looks to end his illustrious career on a high in Abu Dhabi.

After four world championships and 53 race victories, the German will bow out as one of the most decorated drivers of all time. His impending retirement has been met with a wave of tributes from rivals, media and fans.

While Vettel has nothing left to prove before he hangs up his helmet, he left it all out on track during qualifying at the Yas Marina Circuit, where he reached Q3 and set the ninth fastest time in his Aston Martin.

That came despite being held up several times earlier in the session by drivers of his former team Red Bull, where he won his four titles. Sergio Perez and Max Verstappen both got in his way on separate occasions, with Vettel taking to his team radio to make his feelings clear.

“How is that possible?” he fumed. “Three times in a row against these people. And they don’t back off. It’s tenth [of a second lost] in the last corner.”

However, it didn’t stop Vettel qualifying inside the top 10 for his final race on Sunday. World champion Verstappen took pole position and will be joined on the front row by teammate Perez, a week on from their spat at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix, where Verstappen refused to move over for Perez, who is looking to seal second spot in the championship ahead of Charles Leclerc.

The Ferraris of Leclerc and Carlos Sainz Leclerc will line up third and fourth respectively with Lewis Hamilton and George Russell of Mercedes fifth and sixth.

Lando Norris was an impressive seventh for McLaren ahead of Alpine’s Esteban Ocon, Vettel and Daniel Ricciardo in his final qualifying session for McLaren.
