Two England fans have recounted an incredible tale that saw them end up in a "Sheikh's palace" after they went on the hunt for booze.

"Yeah, last night we met one of the Sheikh's sons, and he took us back to the palace! He had lions and everything, and you look around you, it doesn't get any better than this," one of the duo told talkSPORT when asked about their Qatar experience.

The second continued: "Basically, we were obviously on the hunt for some beers, and he said 'we'll sort beers'. So we hopped into the back of his Toyota Landcruiser, ended up in a big palace, and he showed us his big monkeys and his exotic birds – it was nuts!"

And England fans loved the tale on Twitter, with one fan joking: "This is up there with @robbeckettcomic eating chicken next to a bin at the Euros!"

"The fact this genuinely happened makes me so happy, like something from the hangover," a second joked. While a third added: "This sounds more like the Qatar I know. Utterly bonkers yet welcoming!"

And a fourth added: "The fact that this guy is being 100% serious is hilarious!"

The World Cup kicked off on Sunday afternoon with hosts Qatar losing to Ecuador after a blistering start from the South American side.

Former West Ham star Enner Valencia netted twice – and had a third chalked off – all before the half-time whistle, and that caused a mass walk-out from the Qatari fans in attendance.
