A tourist has been filmed climbing an ancient pyramid in Mexico with people shouting and jeering as she ascended the steps.

The holidaymaker was dubbed “disrespectful” after walking up the stairs into the Mayan temple.

She then went on to stand near the top of the monument waving her arms at the people shouting at her.

Then, the woman could be seen waving her arms in the air and dancing from side to side while waving her hat around.

An official could be seen following her up the pyramid to escort her to the ground below.

Tourists surrounded the woman when she reached the bottom of the stairs.

The woman’s act could be considered trespassing to the site which indy100 reports is the Mayan Temple of Kukulcan at Chichén Itzá.

The Mesoamerican temple at the centre of the famous archaeological site was built at some time between the 8th and 12th century AD – placing it at at least 700 years old though it could be as much as 1000 years old.

There are 91 steps in total to the top of the temple and people were banned from climbing them in 2006 after someone died after slipping and falling.

As yet, the woman has not been formally identified.

However, it's not the first time a similar event has happened – in January this year another woman was criticised after climbing the same temple.
