Richard Keys says Sian Massey-Ellis thanked him ‘after he refused to show her errors’

Richard Keys has insisted that Sian Massey-Ellis – who was at the centre of his sexism storm – thanked him after he refused to show her errors on Sky.

It's been over a decade since Keys and his broadcasting partner Andy Gray were sacked by Sky. The pair had been dumped by the broadcaster after videos were leaked of the duo making sexist comments towards Massey-Ellis.

However, Keys has now revealed to Piers Morgan that he insisted Sky didn't show Massey's errors in her first game as an official. He said: "I questioned whether a young lady knew the offside law. She came from Coventry like I did, so thought I might have known her father.

"On air, I said, ‘good luck.’ But she did make a number of errors the first half that I was incessant we didn’t show on air.

"We spoke the next day, I rang and apologised, and she said, ‘Don't worry it’s just banter.’ I said, ‘no it’s a big deal.' And she said, ‘there were a couple of things first-half I am glad you didn’t show.’

"At the time I was on the defensive, but you have also been on the receiving end [Piers]- it’s a terrible place to be. If I had done things differently, I would have addressed things quicker. Then you have to factor in mental health, which people forget.

"I found myself in a very difficult place. I could not accept the forest fire that was engulfing us."

Keys and Gray are currently the two lead broadcasters on BeIN Sports, and they haven't worked on live UK TV since the incident. However, Keys did hint he's ready for a return to the UK during his sit-down interview with Morgan.
