Two in five parents hope their kids will choose a career as a tradesperson – with builders (28%), electricians (31%), and engineers (32%) the top jobs they would like their youngsters to pursue.

Over half of mums and dads (54%), with children aged under 16, think tradespeople make a real difference to people's lives, and 40% want to see their kids making a positive difference to customers through their work.

The poll, of 2,000 parents, found that 64% feel this career path is one to be proud of – and 60% have urged their offspring to learn a skill like plumbing or engineering, or to become a car mechanic.

In fact, 56% of the parents polled wish they could have made more of a difference to people's lives in their jobs – with half (51%) regretting not pursuing a more practical career themselves.

The research was commissioned by British Gas, which has committed to creating 3,500 apprenticeships over the next decade.
