Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer brutally mock Germany after shock World Cup exit

Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer have both brutally mocked Germany heading home in the group stages for the second successive World Cup.

England were in football wunderland last night after arch rivals Germany crashed out of the World Cup.

Despite Germany doing their part by defeating Costa Rica 4-2, results heading into the final game came back to haunt Hansi Flick's side. Japan's win over Spain – in controversial fashion – saw both the Japanese and Spanish sides advance to the knockout rounds.

Shearer took the first swipe on Twitter, uploading a video of him laughing from a recent BBC Match of the Day podcast, with the caption: "Germany are out of the #FIFAWorldCup in the group stage!!!"

And not letting his broadcasting partner have all the fun, Lineker soon also took a jab at the floundering German side.

Lineker shared the same clip, but he added: "'Football is a simple game. Twenty-two men chase a ball for 90 minutes and at the end, the Germans always win'. If they get through the group stage."

The cheeky quip has become something of a catchphrase for Lineker, and he used the same line when the Germans were dumped out in 2018. However, that time instead of a clip he added: "The Germans no longer always win. Previous version is confined to history.

Over on ITV, Gary Neville was also unsympathetic to Flick's side, and he joked: "The reason why I’m a little bit relaxed is that Germany are the ones suffering and we’ve suffered a lot at the hands of Germany over the years."

While English fans joked Germany's dubious exit was justice for Frank Lampard's ghost goal at the 2010 World Cup.

The astonishing results which shocked the footballing world sparked delight and amazement among Three Lions’ fans in the desert who streamed into hotel bars to toast the demise of their old foe.

Since the Three Lions’ 1966 tournament triumph the Germans have knocked England out of three World Cups.

Just as they did against Japan the Germany blew a lead – and were at one stage 2-1 down, before their fight back to win the game ironically allowed Spain to qualify.

They will play Morocco – who beat Canada 2-1 to top Group F – on December 6.

Match Of The Day host Gary Lineker tweeted: "Another boring night of World Cup football."
