England stars including Raheem Sterling were offered the chance of increased security at their homes before heading to the World Cup.

Sterling has flown back to England from Qatar 2022 following the news armed intruders raided his London home while his family were inside.

It remains to be seen when or even if the Chelsea superstar will return to the tournament.

England face France in a crunch quarter final this weekend, but Southgate admits he doesn't have a clue if Sterling will be back in the camp or available for selection.

And Southgate has revealed the FA consulted with Three Lions stars ahead of the tournament about beefing up security at their homes – due to the fact the players would be away for up to five weeks.

The FA will now hold more talks with the squad in a bid to see if more measures can be taken to protect their loved ones.

Southgate said: "We had offered that to players (more security).

"Without talking about the individual details too much, because I think it's important we respect his (Sterling's) privacy, but yeah that was something we did discuss with the players before we left.

"I think there's a little bit (for Raheem) in the midst of moving house that played a part in that.

"But we are very conscious of it. And with what's happened, we will have that conversation again."

The Three Lions will continue their tournament – with or without Sterling – against France on Saturday night. Southgate's side booked their place in the quarter-finals in Qatar with a convincing 3-0 win over Senegal.

France confirmed their place in the last-eight with an equally destructive victory, seeing off Poland 3-1 in a performance inspired by PSG star Kylian Mbappe.
