The smiling World Cup fan who went viral while cheering on England in Qatar has shared a selfie with Laura Woods on Twitter.

England booked their place in the quarter-finals on Sunday with a dominant 3-0 performance against Senegal. At one point amid all the frenzy, the camera panned to a Three Lions fan in the crowd who held up his replica World Cup trophy with a joyful facial expression.

His sheer look of delight – along with his resemblance to former England manager Steve McClaren – resonated with viewers back home and he quickly became a viral hit on social media.

But the fan, nicknamed by those who don’t know him on Twitter as ‘That Guy’ or ‘happy England fan’, has now emerged from his slumber.

Known only by his Twitter tag @Smiley_Thai, the loveable Englishman took to Twitter on Thursday to reply to a photo posted by ITV World Cup presenter Woods .

He wrote in one of his first tweets in well over a year: “Here’s the selfie. Thanks Laura. What a lovely lady you are!” To which the presenter replied: “Amazing!! Lovely to meet you!”
