Where England stand with 23 players at risk of a World Cup ban during quarter-finals

Several World Cup stars are just one booking away from missing the semi-finals of the tournament with a total of 23 walking a suspension tightrope.

Rules dictated by FIFA state that a player who receives two yellow cards before the semi-finals of the competition will face a one-match suspension with bookings not wiped out until after the final whistle of quarter-final clashes.

As a result, players who have accumulated one yellow card in the group stage or in the round of 16 are at risk of missing the semi-finals should they pick up a booking in the quarter-finals, and their team progresses.

Thankfully Gareth Southgate's side boast an unblemished record so far in the Middle East. Not a single member of England's 26-man squad has received a booking in the tournament.

Only a red card would prevent a member of the Three Lions from featuring in a potential semi-final match-up against either Portugal or Morocco with a one-game ban also in place for an instant dismissal or two separate yellow cards.

However, opponents France will have two players treading dangerously at Al Bayt Stadium. Both midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni and defender Jules Kounde are at risk of missing a last-four showdown should Brazilian referee Wilton Sampaio take their names in his notebook.

While both will be available for selection by Didier Deschamps for Saturday's crucial encounter, the Three Lions have already benefited from FIFA's suspension rule in the Qatar-based tournament.

Everton ace Idrissa Gueye was forced to watch from the sidelines during England's 3-0 win over Senegal, having picked up yellow cards in their group-stage matches against the Netherlands and Ecuador.

Every nation, barring England, has at least one player at risk of suspension in the quarter-finals. No more so than Portugal who have five players threatened with missing a potential last-four clash.

Players at risk of suspension:

Argentina: Marcos Acuna, Gonzalo Montiel

Brazil: Fred, Bruno Guimaraes, Eder Militao

Croatia: Borna Barisic, Mateo Kovacic, Dejan Lovren, Luka Modric

France: Jules Kounde, Aurelien Tchouameni

Morocco: Sofyan Amrabat, Abdelhamid Sabiri, Roman Saiss

Netherlands: Nathan Ake, Frenkie de Jong, Matthijs de Ligt, Teun Koopmeiners
