Steven Gerrard has left football fans baffled on social media after uploading a new snap alongside a fellow Liverpool hero.

The ex-Premier League boss, 42, posed for a photo alongside Slovakian beast Martin Skrtel, who is sporting a vastly different look to his skinhead days at Anfield.

Gerrard, who was sacked as manager of Aston Villa in October, then shared the cosy pic with his mega 10.6million Instagram following, adding the caption "Nice catching up @martin37skrtel #MS37".

Since leaving Merseyside six years ago, Skrtel, 37, has gotten rid of the bald head synonymous with his Liverpool career and was instead seemingly trying to copy the hairstyle of his former skipper.

Wearing a black jumper and light-wash jeans, the no-nonsense centre-back has now grown out his dark hair to the point where he can style the front, opting for a gelled combover in the exact same direction as Gerrard.

Skrtel's new locks appeared to cause a meltdown on social media with fans shocked at the transformation of the ex-Reds icon. "Cant be the real skrtel this guys got hair," joked one supporter.

"Why does he look younger with hair?" quizzed a second. "Skrtel with hair is scarier than bald Skrtel," harked a third. While a fourth commented: "Skrtel's hair comeback hasn't been talked about."

Starting his career in his homeland at AS Trencin, Skrtel moved to Russian giants Zenit Saint Petersburg in the summer of 2004, winning the Russian Premier League before heading to Liverpool.

A firm fan favourite during his eight-and-a-half-year stay at Anfield, the Slovakian international made over 300 appearances for the Reds and was a part of their League Cup-winning side of 2012, scoring in the final against Cardiff City.

Skrtel joined Fenerbahce not long after the arrival of Jurgen Klopp, spending three seasons at the club before an ill-thought-out move to Atalanta where he spent just three weeks.

Unable to adapt to the Bergamo lifestyle, he returned to the Super Lig with Istanbul Basaksehir, playing 20 matches as The Grey Owls claimed their first-ever league title.

He left to join Slovakian first-division side Spartak Trnava in 2021, winning the Slovak Cup in his one season at the club. Currently unattached, Skrtel is a four-time Slovak Footballer of the Year and was named Liverpool's Player of the Year for the 2011/12 season.
