England’s World Cup ratings – Bellingham shines in Qatar as Maguire fails at key moment

England didn't bring football home for Christmas, and Gareth Southgate's hopefuls came crashing back to earth following a disappointing Saturday evening.

Harry Kane's tale of two penalties against France, consigned the Three Lions to an early plane home. And while it all ended in tears, Southgate's side can take numerous positives from the tournament as they gear up for Euro 2024.

And Daily Star Sport has rated each player who made an appearance for the Three Lions under the winter sun. From the brilliance of Bellingham to the redemption of Henderson, we have rated Southgate's stars on a scale from 1-10.

JORDAN PICKFORD 8

Kept three clean sheets and made big saves at big times, including an important one against Senegal. Harshly criticised for France’s opener.

KIERAN TRIPPIER 7
Lost his place once Walker was fit, which was no fault of his own. A victim of Southgate sticking to back four but impressed when played.

KYLE WALKER 7
Was rusty to begin with which was understandable after a long period out but was sharp enough to keep Kylian Mbappe relatively quiet against France.

TRENT ALEXANDER-ARNOLD 6
Only got 33 minutes against Wales so hard to judge but he will be disappointed not to get more time on the pitch in this tournament.

JOHN STONES 8

A really good tournament for the Manchester City defender who may not be a guaranteed starter for his club but is for England.

HARRY MAGUIRE 6
Much improved on his club form and character impressive to stand up to critics but against France he was caught out by Olivier Giroud. In the big moment he didn’t do his job.

ERIC DIER 6
Brought on to bring defensive stability against Iran and Senegal. Did his job as a squad player in this tournament rather than starter.

LUKE SHAW 7
A real threat down the left flank during the whole tournament, solid defensively. A player revived for both club and country now.

JORDAN HENDERSON 8

Didn’t look like he would feature before tournament but introduction vs USA gave Southgate the idea to go with midfield three. Energy at all times.

DECLAN RICE 8

If Kane ever wants to give up the armband, England have a leader in Rice ready to take it. So important to how this team operates.

JUDE BELLINGHAM 9

One of the stars of this World Cup, his performance against Senegal was the highlight but superb throughout. Borussia Dortmund have one of the hottest properties in world football.

MASON MOUNT 6

Started the tournament but didn’t really offer much in midfield and lost his place. Won penalty against France which may have turned game.

KALVIN PHILLIPS 6

Did his job when called upon from the bench but didn’t get many minutes after coming into the tournament off the back of an injury.

BUKAYO SAKA 8

Not far off Bellingham in being a star of the tournament stakes. Three goals and caused havoc against France. Diamond.

MARCUS RASHFORD 7

Was in contention for World Cup Golden Boot at one stage when he bagged a brace against Wales but tough to shine with talent ahead of him.

JACK GREALISH 6

Used as an impact sub, got himself a goal but will have wanted to have played more. Maybe should have come on earlier against France.

HARRY KANE 7

He had a terrific tournament. Two goals but it was more about his play in building England attacks. Loses a mark for that penalty miss.

PHIL FODEN 7

Was electric at times in the tournament with some terrific play on the left flank but had his quiet moments, including for most of the France defeat.

RAHEEM STERLING 6

Understandably went home to support family after break in. Will be frustrated he didn’t build on goal against Iran but rightly lost place to Saka and Foden.

CALLUM WILSON 6

Got himself an assist, made a couple of substitute appearances but was battling with a thigh injury and never going to replace Kane.
