Former Aston Villa star Barry Bannan has joked he had to sell himself on Football Manager – as he wasn't good enough.

Bannan opened up about his Football Manager save at the helm of Celtic – where he named himself Barry Banninho. Bannan, who is currently at League One side Sheffield Wednesday, was appearing on BBC Sports Owls Heaven podcast.

The midfielder said: "I signed myself for Celtic, a couple of weeks ago, when I was in charge of Celtic. But I actually never played myself: I signed myself played a few games and I was like err."

And then when asked if it was just a sentimental signing, Bannan continued: "No, I thought I was going to do better than I did!"

"Nah not yet [on transfer listing himself], but probably at the end of the season, I'll be gone you know!" The conversation then continued as Bannan was asked if he uses his real name on the game, but he revealed he uses a fake one.

Bannan explained he hates seeing headlines in the game such as 'Barry Bannan signs Barry Bannan' – so he named himself Banninho.

Bannan had started his youth career at Celtic, turning out for the Glasgow side's youth teams between 2002 and 2004 – but he never broke into the first team.

Instead, Bannan's first start would come south of the border with Villa, and he has never returned to Scotland for first-team football. However, the Wednesday captain has represented his country on 27 occasions.
