Chris Waddle scored ‘sauciest six-a-side goal of all time’ captured on classic clip

Former England international Chris Waddle was some player, even if the penalty he blazed over the bar at Italia 90 is all people remember him for (*cough* Sam Matterface *cough*).

The Newcastle-born midfielder is one of few English stars to have made a name for himself overseas. He spent three seasons at Marseille, becoming an instant fan favourite thanks to his flamboyant playing style (and winning three Ligue 1 titles in a row didn't hurt either).

In honour of his 62nd birthday on Wednesday, clips of Waddle producing moments of magic started doing the rounds on social media, with an utterly mesmeric goal he scored in a random six-a-side game being arguably the pick of the bunch.

In classic Waddle fashion, he flicks the ball over his head to evade an opponent before charging forward with the ball and chipping the goalkeeper with the outside of his boot from the half-way line.

One Twitter user described it was "the sauciest six-a-side goal of all time", and who could disagree?

Another wrote: "Genius footballer. Everything about this is beautiful." A third said: "Man could ping before pinging became fashionable."

Waddle began his career at boyhood club Newcastle, breaking into the team as a 20-year-old in 1980, before sealing a move to Tottenham in 1985. He spent four seasons at White Hart Lane before being snapped up by Marseille for a fee of £4.5m – the third-highest sum ever paid for a footballer at the time.

After three years abroad he joined Sheffield Wednesday before spending the final few years of his career jumping around the lower divisions.

He played 62 times for England, starring at both the 1986 and 1990 World Cups, before calling time on his international career aged just 31.
